Tolkientober day 23: Elbereth Gilthoniel, Varda, Celestial Queen of the Stars
I was talking to Ser Kay today about how celestial bodies can influence magic. As an example, water magic tends to be stronger at nighttime, due to the moon, while fire magic tends to be stronger during the day, thanks to the sun. They asked if the same could be true of people- apparently, Arthur tends to be full of energy during the day but is very difficult to wake up during the night. Kay was a bit disappointed by my explanation that he was probably just a heavy sleeper who was getting some much-needed rest after a long day fulfilling his royal duties. But not everything has to be magic- in fact, I think the world is more impressive when not everything can be brushed aside by a simple “that’s magic” explanation!
