“We’ll be sat next to the Drakes for dinner; all you need to do is make friendly conversation with Timothy and avoid antagonizing his parents. Aside from that, seek him out once or twice while the party is mingling. Let people see you together.”
“I don’t have to dance with him or anything, do I?” he checks.
“The society pages would probably find that charming,” Bruce muses, “but no. You’re a little young for that to be expected.”
“Okay,” Jason says. “I can do that. Just once or twice?”
“Just once or twice,” Bruce confirms.
And he can keep dinner conversation short by keeping his mouth full—the food at these things always sucks, too, but Jason’s literally eaten out of dumpsters. He can survive some bland entrees.
It’s okay. These expectations aren’t…horrible.
“It should be painless,” Bruce claims.
Easy for him to say. He’s never suffered through an excruciating lunch with Jason’s fiancé.
