There are so many new hot fried chicken shops but Chef Mei Lin’s Daybird manages to stand out with a unique flavor profile: Sichuan style fried chicken. The fried chicken thigh reminded me of Hot Star’s popcorn chicken filet (Taiwanese style) because of the shape, juiciness and crunchy exterior. The spicing is different and Daybird’s chicken is better (and I like Hot Star) because it’s crunchier and more flavorful. Also, they use better chicken (Jidori).
The menu is simple: chicken tenders, chicken sando, sides, sauces, and drinks. Choose your spice level: no heat, mild, medium, hot and extreme. Extreme is made with ghost peppers so it is spicy enough to burn your mouth.
Szechuan hot chicken sando ($13.50): Jidori chicken thigh fried in rice bran oil, cabbage slaw with pickled chilis. The sandwich was ready sooner than I expected (under 10 minutes). The chicken was a flattened boneless filet. It smelled incredible – like citrusy Asian spices. The fried batter was thicker, super crunchy, very spicy and super flavorful – one of the most flavorful fried chicken batters I’ve ever had with lots of different spices lending to the complexity of flavors. There was a bit of sweetness and lots of burning heat. The meat was tender and juicy. Superb. Loved the light, fresh, crunchy cabbage slaw and pickles. The bun was a soft, sweet, brioche bun. It wasn’t heated. I prefer a warm bun. Also, the bun got soggy towards the end and I was eating pretty fast. The chicken piece was big enough to stick out of the bun (way out) and there was plenty of slaw.
Order at the door. There is no seating. They’re in a strip mall with parking.
Here’s an OC of mine when I was coming up with superhero stories wayback when around middle/high school
She is probably STILL a favorite of mine. Even after all these years a bunch of her concept still holds up.
Old sketch: probably 10 years old now.
So I’ve always been fascinated by phoenix in marvel comics. But I took it a step further. AND i kind of like having superpowers have a personal cost.
Firebird. I first called her, but later found out there’s an obscure avenger called Firebird, so i can’t remember if I ever rectified that. If I did I think it might have been Sunbird or OOooo i remember Daybird. I called her Daybird.
Read about her below
Rachel Viennes’ powers first showed themselves in a devastating display at her graduation party with her immediate family. She became like the phoenix, and literally dies, bursts into flame and ash. The next day, as the sun rises she reforms from the ashes, but her family is gone from the blast. Devastated she runs away, and finds out she can fly and goes far away
She can control and generate fire, and whenever she dies she bursts into flame, becomes ashes, and rises at the next sunrise. There’s other everyday tolls her powers take on her. She can’t bear the cold, wherever she goes she uncontrollably affects the temperature near her.
I wanted to make her origin rooted in myth from her ancestors, possibly being a reincarnated god. I constantly was changing her ethnicity because I couldn’t find a myth that would fit. I haven’t written anything since senior year of college, 2010, 2011, so i can’t remember if I did settle on a specific mythological figure.
Her whole journey would be to figure out who and what she is, as well as learning to live on without her family, learning to live with her powers and deciding to rescue people who need saving.
Her villain, at one point, was the legit Devil. Lucifer (mixed mythology) in which he tries to convince her she’s an angel, or was an angel, and fell to earth like he did, through disobedience. “We’re the same” he tells her. Even though it’s all a lie, she believes him and trusts him in the beginning because he’s the only one with answers. Also, he’s the first one she meets who has any kind of powers, so she feels he can understand her like no one else does.
He remains kind of her “nemesis” because he “dies” like she does. Because evil can’t be completely removed. Except he is reincarnated into a new host. She actually reforms her body. Her rise from the ashes isn’t anything conscious on her part. She does contemplate suicide at many times, but always comes back.
OH yeah, forgot one more “aspect” of the toll her powers take. The first guy she has a real relationship with she discovers that her powers are tied to her emotions, so when they try to have sex she actually almost kills him with her powers (or maybe she does kill him? i was a morbid teenager). Controlling her powers is completely tied to controlling her emotions. If her emotions flare, so will her powers, regardless of what she wants. So, Lucifer also is appealing to her because she CANT kill him with her powers, so he’s the only person she can safely have physical intimacy with (before she finds out he’s Lucifer).
So yes. Before he becomes her villain (where she KNOWS he’s a bad guy) he’s actually her love interest until his identity is revealed.
