It’s #tbt Throwback Thursday and National #DayoftheHorse. Steam locomotives were once called “iron horses.” Today, Norfolk Southern’s corporate symbol is the Thoroughbred. Representing speed and reliability, the Thoroughbred is used on everything from locomotives to marketing materials. Over the years, several thoroughbreds have represented NS. The first was an eight-year-old stallion from New Jersey named David. Introduced in 1982 after the consolidation that formed NS, David was featured in an advertisement called “From the Championship Heritage of Two Great Railways Comes Norfolk Southern Corporation.” The new railroad (like Norfolk & Western and Southern before it) would bring superior service, lower distribution costs, and shorter transit times to shippers. Innovation has long been an important part of the railroad. Behind every Norfolk Southern train is an extensive network of track and terminals, a fleet of sophisticated locomotives and freight cars, and a team of dedicated employees who work around the clock to provide safe and reliable rail transportation.
