hey there! I apologize to for not having been very active this summer! I’ve been preparing for college internships, applying to grad school, working, and fighting a nightmare of what appears to be bird mites in my home life just likes to give me all the lemons fml

I probably won’t have full-fledged posts until late December this year, but i did want to touch on an ask i’ve had sitting in my inbox for a while! (i may do a better post with coordinating panel shots and further elaboration in the future!)

What does Ranpo think of Dazai and vice versa? For example, in Dazai's entrance exam, Ranpo seems to have saw straight through Dazai's lie of what his previous job was. They both have extremely brilliant minds... but there's barely anything on their interactions. I am very curious what do they think of each other?

i’ve not had the chance to finish the Entrance Exam ln, but i’ll share my current thinking for now!

I believe Ranpo and Dazai both initially have reservations about each other. Ranpo can see past a lot, and i think (initially) he knows there is a lot unknown about Dazai and his past. i don’t think he’s able to crack far into it, even given his ability smarts. i think Ranpo does know that Dazai has a darker side and can be deceptive and manipulative. however, i like to think that as Ranpo has worked with Dazai, he comes to understand that deception and manipulation are Dazai’s modes of operation.

i believe Ranpo sees Dazai not so much as a pawn, but as a crucial piece to the agency’s success. while Ranpo and Dazai both employ amazing trains of logic, reasoning, and planning—they bring different insights to agency. note how in one of the early episodes, Dazai admitted he didn’t know exactly how Ranpo figured out everything in the murder of the pretty lady who was found in the water. note also how Dazai strategized with Ranpo before that big guild battle. Remember how one of them asked whether it should end by the mountains or the water or something like that, idk. they are good compliments, and i believe Ranpo sees this      

i believe Ranpo sees Dazai as a crucial function to the ADA maybe not most of the time because Dazai is lazy and is missing in action half the time smh when it really counts. Dazai’s skill set is almost invaluable to the agency, whether or not his methods align with Ranpo’s or the agency’s exact moral codes.

I believe Ranpo may have suspicions about Dazai’s long term goals, about his exact motivations for joining the agency, but that his suspicions have no viable, concrete evidence to rest on. for now, Ranpo is content to have someone like Dazai on hand.

I believe Dazai sees sees Ranpo in a very similar way, except that Dazai cares less about the agency’s success and more about having opportunities to strategize and bring down opponents. Ranpo is somewhat similar. he cares a lot about the agency, although I’d say much of his motivation comes from solving cases and using his ability smarts

i would also say that Dazai sees Ranpo as a good edge. i don’t think he sees him as a pawn, but he definitely sees Ranpo as an advantage. for one, i think Ranpo would suspect Dazai of using him as a pawn and Dazai knows this. he can manipulate Atshushi though a lot more easily (not letting him know that Kyouka would be saved in the end of his plan for instance)

i’d like to emphasize that i don’t think Dazai sees anyone in the agency as his pawn exactly. i don’t think he sees anyone as being disposable. but he does have a deceptive and manipulative way of working with people

also, in case it wasn’t obvious, i don’t think Dazai sees Ranpo as being deceptive and manipulative (or having a dark past). not that Ranpo’s moral codes are very strict either, but you get what i mean. i believe Dazai may suspect that Ranpo still has reservations about him, but that they are largely insignificant with the way Dazai has presented himself in the agency so far. at the moment, the two are content to believe that the other is on their side and that they are working toward the same goals.  

so that’s what i think right now. but after i catch up with the ln, i might extend this! great question though. i didn’t really consider how similar these two were until now.

Hello, and welcome to ESD’s first character discussion!

Today’s topic is Atsushi Nakajima. We’ll be discussing various aspects of Atsushi’s character, including his relationships with other characters, and his progress overall. The main topic of this discussion will be Atsushi’s PTSD, and how it affects him, both mentally and physically, during the events of Bungou Stray Dogs.

Before we start, we would like to make note that this post is not spoiler free, so, if you haven’t caught up with the anime, or the manga as of yet, it may be in your best interest to put this aside until then. There will be mentions of abuse here, so please be careful if you are not comfortable with this. Keeping that in mind, let’s get started, shall we?

As the story begins, we are introduced to Atsushi Nakajima, who was thrown out of the orphanage that he had grown up in due to there being “budget cuts”. However, Atsushi was the only one made to leave. While the orphanage was not the nicest place to live, as the children, especially Atsushi, were abused, he had nowhere else to go and had absolutely no money. He simply wandered the streets until his body couldn’t keep going.

At this time, he determined that his only means of survival would be to resort to stealing, and prepared himself to rob the next person he saw. The next person he saw of course, ended up being Dazai Osamu, as he was trying to drown himself. After a strange turn of events, Atsushi found himself a member of the Armed Detective Agency by the next day. On the surface, the sudden change in his life didn’t affect him too much, though it became more obvious later on that he thought of himself as a burden to the others. When he found out that the Port Mafia sought him for the bounty on his head, this didn’t help any either. Now that Atsushi was surrounded by people that cared more for him than anyone had in his life, he felt as if he was dragging them down and putting them all in danger by being there. While this could be played off as Atsushi being worried due to the circumstances of his bounty, it becomes clear that it goes well beyond this, and that due to the abuse he endured as a child, Atsushi sees himself as someone undeserving of the care and attention he is given.

Atsushi, like many who endured childhood abuse and neglect, suffers from PTSD, or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. While some primarily attribute PTSD to soldiers who have seen action, the disorder can occur after any situation that results in significant trauma, this can be the loss of a friend or family member, childhood abuse or neglect, as listed above, and other such events. As seen in the many flashbacks to Atsushi’s childhood, he suffered greatly at the hands of the headmaster of his orphanage, as well as the other children who willingly allowed Atsushi to take the blame knowing it would spare them of further abuse. Because of this, Atsushi grew up believing that he had no place in the world and that he was a waste of space. These flashbacks also serve as a window of sorts into Atsushi’s mind, showing how often he thinks back on these events.

Adding on to all this; Atsushi’s life began quite tragically, as he was abandoned in the garbage by his parents, whether or not this had to do with him being an ability user, or the result of negligence, is unknown. Shortly thereafter, the headmaster of the orphanage found Atsushi and took him in. While this did indeed save the boy’s life, this was far from the beginning of a happy childhood. During his years spent at the orphanage, Atsushi endured both emotional and physical abuse, ranging from insults, such as being called “useless”, to being burned by a heated piece of metal, which resulted in the scars seen on the left side of Atsushi’s torso. The headmaster would also lock Atsushi away in a cell and inject him with unknown substances.

-Healing-

Throughout the series, we have seen Atsushi struggle with his self worth and the damage caused by the abuse he suffered in his childhood years. However, thanks to the help of others, as well as some self motivation, he has also started the long process of healing. As the story moves forward, we see Atsushi grow significantly as a character, even though many fans feel he should have made greater progress. The process of healing from years and years of trauma takes a great deal of time and it has not been long since Atsushi was free of this abuse. As the story continues, he will make more progress, but for now, he is still accustomed to his negative way of thinking. Atsushi has taken a number of steps forward from who he was when he was first introduced, though signs of his past remain, as they likely will all his life.

-Relationships-

Atsushi has bonded with many people since joining the agency, but, these bonds are not just limited to those in the Armed Detective Agency. We’ve seen him bond with those from the Port Mafia, as well as the Guild. One of the more prominent bonds that is actively being explored through the narrative is the one between himself and Akutagawa Ryunosuke of the Port Mafia, who was once Dazai’s subordinate during his time in the mafia. What started as an awful, one-sided rivalry, became something close to a mutual understanding between the two. Some healthier relationships would be those with Kyouka Izumi and Lucy Maud Montgomery. When Atsushi first met Kyouka, she was on a mission to blow up a train via a suicide vest. As soon as Kyouka admitted to him that she didn’t want to kill anymore and jumped off, Atsushi found himself jumping after her to save her. After this, Atsushi continuously helped Kyouka, which led to her joining the agency. Atsushi decided to help a complete stranger when he could’ve ran away. Later, when Atsushi was trapped aboard the Moby Dick, he talked with Montgomery. When she shared her tragic past, Atsushi empathized with her and showed her his own scars. This was a part of himself that he is still uncomfortable with, but being able to talk about them shows that he is healing and accepts that the event was in the past. And, despite Montgomery working for the enemy, he still placed his trust in her.

After stealing from the orphanage’s trash, Atsushi was taken to the headmaster’s office and given a hammer and a nail, and was told to drive the nail through his foot as punishment for his “crime”. When Atsushi did not do as he was told, the headmaster did it himself.

Much later, after Atsushi had joined the agency, the headmaster was discovered to be dead. As it turns out, he had been on his way to sell a gun to buy flowers with the money. These flowers were likely meant to be given to Atsushi. Upon the discovery of his abuser being dead, Atsushi did not know how to react. After the investigation, it became clear that the headmaster had acted towards Atsushi in such a manner in an attempt to make him “stronger”. Dazai, who found Atsushi after the incident, spoke to him regarding the headmaster, and Atsushi asked him how he should feel knowing that someone he hated so much was dead. Dazai told him, simply, “When someone’s father passes away, they will cry.” After Dazai departed, Atsushi is seen in tears.

Not all relationships in Atsushi’s life are bad however, as over the course of the story, Atsushi has made a few friends, as well as an unlikely rivalry with Akutagawa. These relationships have helped to shape who he is as a person. Atsushi has gone through a great deal of character development since he left the orphanage. Of course he’s still healing and suffering from his PTSD, but he is doing much better with the support of his friends and the passage of time.
