In 1917 Norman Wilkinson – an artist and illustrator serving as a Royal Navy volunteer during World War I – came up with an idea to help British ships avoid German torpedoes: he invented an eye-catching, highly-contrasted and asymmetrically-shaped camouflage pattern intended to confuse rather than conceal. It was called razzle dazzle.
