NEW SUPERGIRL BOOK? FROM DETECTIVE COMICS COMICS???
It's more likely than you think!
LET'S DISCUSS!!!!
THE GOOD:
Praise be, the new book is written and drawn by a woman. Given how dude-heavy the announcements have been ever since the Absolute line was put in place, (and arguably even before that) I was honestly concerned.
And it's Sophie Campbell! I'm only familiar with her artwork, not so much her writing, but as I understand it, her TMNT run was very well received.
As the announcement states, she's a fan of the bronze age comics, '84 film, and CW TV show, which I think is pretty neat. I feel like the 70s Supergirl comics are often dismissed/forgotten; I think it would be a nice change up to have a modern Supergirl comic that largely pulls from that era for inspiration.
Also mentioned in the announcement, this is an earth-bound Supergirl story, specifically she's headed back to Midvale, so I'm really curious to see how that goes!
I kinda just like that this is a new book with a new-to-DC creator. I don't really know what to expect, which is exciting.
THE MEH:
I honestly don't wanna like. Be too negative out of the gate here, since it has been SO LOOOOOOONG since we've had a dedicated Supergirl book on the shelves. Like. This is good. And exciting. Full stop.
BUT I DO HAVE ~OPINIONS~ specifically on the costume.
It's. Not great. XD
It feels like kind of the worst combination of her post-crisis look and the Rebirth suit, but more concerning than just like, aesthetics, is that it looks like it skews young to me.
Kara is in her early 20s and I worry that bringing back the exposed midriff and skirt combo is like. A step backwards in terms of her maturing/aging.
(I'm also trying to keep in mind that it is like. I guess technically on trend in that the high waist/crop top is a Thing in athleisure/casual wear these days. I think the problem is that *my* main point of reference is the Terrible Early 00s Looks. XD)
Also kinda curious how Campbell is gonna build out Midvale, given that uhhhhh....it hasn't been a part of Kara's origin in the New 52/Rebirth era, but I guess arguably it is...now????
...Wait no I'm not done complaining about the suit. XD I don't think cover artists should be in charge of designing suits that interior artists are stuck with drawing. XD
Okay to bring it back to positives:
Given that most of Kara's stuff of late has been like...'sad introspective journeys through space', I'm more than okay with a changeup. Something joyful and lighthearted could be really fun!
Even if I think this doesn't quite square with where Kara *is* in terms of current continuity...it does look really charming and I'm eager to see where it goes. (This is the main cover by Campbell!)
Oh and also: KRYPTO BOOK BY RYAN NORTH?!?!?! GOOD, YES, GOOD. Also also: Mystery of the Kris Anka cover tease solved, it was just a Wonder Woman/Superman mashup variant. XD
