A/N: I hope you enjoy this fic, hun. I am terribly sorry it took so long. Let me know what you think of it xoxo
I stood quietly by the curtained windows that opened out onto a balcony where the murmuring of the sea waves kindled their own hypnotic symphony. Though, I had been much too angry to admire the beauty of the sea as I turn my attention to my mother with a strong glare. She sat upon the couch inlaid with bone and ivory in her silk garment of sangria purple and though her clothes subtly suggested Atlantean royalty, her face conveyed wisdom and simplicity.
“Is this marriage in means of a punishment?” I question and my mother sat forward as she watched me with an expression of bewilderment.
“How can you speak such words, my dear?” She stood up from the couch, then touched my cheek with the back of her palm. “Marriage is meant to be a beautiful promise through eternity. A vow to try the hardest you have ever tried in your life. Marriage is a place for the achievement of a personal integrity.”
“Yes but by your doing.” My words tighten in anger yet my mother did not speak but I notice a flicker of emotion cross her face. “This arrangement is not of my own free will and certainly not of desire of my heart. I am to be wed only for the good of Atlantis and for its citizens and you simply command me to be happy by being a mere pawn in a political arrangement.”
“It would not be a political arrangement if you grow to love him.”
“Love him?” I look at her bewildered as my ire rose. “He’s a man who’d rather people fear him as a manipulative, ruthless King than respect him. I cannot love someone of such characteristics.”
“My dear, you are the daughter of Poseidon.” My mother pronounced as she took a hold of my shoulders. “You were destined for this fate.”
“A fate to become an embarrassment to all of Atlantis.” I retorted.
“Such a shame that my soon-to-be wife thinks of me in such a manner.” A low voice suddenly spoke as it shook me. I stiffen my back at the sight of Orm entering my room. Both, my mother and I turned to look at the strong, towering stature of the King of Atlantis, his eyes like pale sapphires bore a hard expression as he looked at me from across the chamber. At once my ire rose, though, Orm did not seemed to be troubled by my angering demeanour as he swept his gaze over my body and studied the way I filled out the silk tunic of the deepest green.
I flushed under his gaze and my mother walked over to his side, the hems of her dress dancing around her feet as she did so.
“Queen Actaea,” Orm greeted my mother with a sharp nod yet a familiar touching to the face. “I apologize but might I have a moment with your daughter in privacy?”
“Certainly,” my mother replies, smiling and caresses his cheek with her thumb. She passes a meaningful glance towards me and shuts the door. Orm seated himself upon a cushioned chair and I shifted my feet uncomfortably, doing my best to avoid his intense gaze. “Will you not sit for a moment?”
“You do not command me at my own house, Ocean Master.” I say with clipped words and clenched fists at my sides.
“I was merely trying to be polite. After all - ”
“Why have you come here?” I question as I finally look him in the eyes. “To ridicule of what’s to become of me? Or perhaps to gloat?”
Orm clenched his jaw as he leaned against the cushioned chair. “It saddens me that you only think of me as a malevolent person. (Y/N), you know that I am not especially adept at expressing my personal emotions and feelings but I shall try.”
The Ocean Master paused momentarily to meet my eyes and see if my expression had softened from his words but my frustration with him was still evident. Thus, he licked his lower lip and continued,
“Over the months that we have been engaged, I have acted in ways that you have deemed to be cruel. I would simply like to emphasize that I do not wish for you to undergo any further suffering due to my harsh behaviour. So, from now and onwards as my wife, and I as your husband, I wish for our hearts to find a tranquil normality, so to speak.”
I stood by the windows, the curtains swayed from the warm breeze as I gazed at the beauty yet mysterious vastness of the ocean while contemplating over the sincere tone of Orm’s words but I said nothing. Though his words struck me, I knew I would not be able to live in Atlantis as I had grown very fond of my own quiet world here whereas Orm’s world never stopped. My lips trembled as thoughts of living under the enormity of the ocean roamed my mind. My hands began to shake and I clasped them together so it would not appear that I was afraid.
“(Y/N), please say something.” Orm speaks as I heaved a heavy sigh.
I gaze into his eyes and unfamiliarly so, it seems to calm me from my terrified thoughts of the ocean. “I accept your apology, Orm. And I do apologize myself for my own dissonant behaviour towards you.” I reply as I take a seat next to him. “It would be good to find a sense of tranquility between us. But as you already know, I...cannot live in Atlantis.”
Orm smiles and for the first time, I see it reach his eyes as the creases underneath deepen. “I know. That is why I will do what my mother had done before with Arthur’s father.”
I frown, puzzled at the meaning of his words. “And what might that be?”
“I will return here every day, at sunrise.” He replied.
I roll my eyes and rise to my feet. “Whatever the King wishes. I believe you can see yourself out the door or shall I escort you there?”
Orm laughed and proceeded to take my hand in his before I had the chance to leave. “(Y/N), have you not heard from one of the greatest poets of the ancient times that love is a warfare?”
“Yes, a quote of Ovid.”
“And I add to that by saying, I’d be most privileged to rise as it’s victor knowing that the prize of the war is a fair goddess such as yourself. I promise you’ll make a great Queen of Atlantis. Even from here, at shore.”
“I am a prize of warfare?”
Orm chuckles once more as he caresses the back of my hand with his thumb. “I meant no disrespect, my lady. It was meant only as a compliment.”
“Just leave, Ocean Master.” I say, pulling my hand away from his grasp and I hold out my hand towards the door. “I shall see you at sunrise.”
Orm looks outside the balcony, beyond the sea as the sun reflected upon the sparkling waves. He turns his attention back to me, saying, “That is a promise.”
