For this year’s Dean/Cas Pinefest, I had the absolute pleasure of collaborating with the amazing and kind @desiraelovesdestiel Thank you for your encouragement and your kind words <3
The fic that accompanies these illustrations is beautiful and you should go read it right now. Seriously, do yourself a favor and read it!!
The art was made using different mediums, including pencils, ink, watercolors, and Photoshop (click on the images for higher resolution!)
The men of Queer Eye have spent two seasons helping people find their confidence, their best selves, and most importantly, their truths.
They’re very good at what they do.
Meet the Fab Five's newest hero: Castiel Novak, game and toy maker, nominated by Dean Winchester, his best friend and roommate. Dean's plea is simple, help Castiel prepare for the opportunity of a lifetime, a chance at his dream job.
An easy assignment, a cake walk even, until the Fab Five find out things even Dean doesn't know.

“Allow me to introduce you to Castiel Novak, thirty-six, a toy and game inventor from Lawrence, Kansas. He’s been nominated by his best friend of fourteen years and roommate, Dean Winchester.”
Antoni presses play.
A man in a tan trench coat sits on a stool against a grey-blue backdrop, his head down as he fusses with the striped blue tie he’s wearing. The tie has somehow flipped and he’s trying to turn it around. A throat clears offscreen and the man looks up and into the camera.
Every member of the Fab Five gasp, the only exception being Karamo since he can’t take his eyes off the road.
“What?!”
“His eyes,” Tan hisses.
Castiel Novak is a handsome man. Sapphire blue eyes stare imploringly into the camera and Castiel tilts his head, a light flush painting his cheeks as he looks towards the throat clearer. A thick beard covers the bottom half of his face but even with it, his chiseled jaw is easy to see.
“Yes, sorry—hello, my name is Castiel James Novak, I am thirty-six, and am recently unemployed.” Castiel’s stoic as he addresses the camera.
“Dude, this isn’t an application for a dating site,” a voice off camera teases him. “Let me show you how it’s done.”
Karamo huffs out a laugh as he listens in and the rest of them watch as the video goes dark and opens again to another very good looking man, a wide smile revealing perfectly straight teeth and deep dimples. He has laugh lines around kind emerald eyes and none of them can help but be charmed.
Karamo hums his appreciation when he pulls up to a red light and can properly see the video. “What the hell is in the water in Lawrence?” he murmurs.
“Hello, I’m Dean, I’m an Aquarius, I like long walks on the beach, pie, and Led Zeppelin. I’m also Cas’ best friend and nominator.” He gives the camera the cheekiest grin, one side of his mouth tipping up.
“Dean, you’ve never been to the beach.” They can hear Castiel offscreen now.
Dean rolls his eyes and the guys chuckle. “Dude, get out of here so I can talk to America about you.” He makes a shooing motion, his head tilting back as he presumably watches Castiel follow his orders. A door closes and Dean relaxes and turns his grin back to the camera.
“Where was I?” He sits up straighter and shakes out his shoulders, becoming more comfortable in front of the camera. “I tried to tell him not to lead with the unemployed thing but I guess that’s why I called you guys.” Dean raises his hand to point it at the camera. “We need your help.”
Only a very few people in the world know that the celebrated and reclusive poet Jack Allen is just Kansas mechanic Dean Winchester, a high school dropout with a few bucks to his name. Not that it matters anymore; life has left him so wrung out he never wants to pick up another pen.
Until, that is, a string of coincidences leads Dean to auditing a poetry course with one Dr. Castiel Novak. The professor is wildly intelligent, devastatingly handsome...and just so happens to be academia's foremost expert on Jack Allen.

That night, instead of taking his quick plate of spaghetti to the couch, Dean sat down at the small kitchen table and opened the Howl facsimile again, and examined each draft more slowly. Then he read all the extra materials, the articles and letters Ginsberg had written about his process and his influences, discussion of the obscenity trial that nearly stopped it from being printed, and most of all, first person accounts of its premiere. Ginsberg hadn't written all of it yet by the time he found himself in that little smoky room in San Francisco, but he stood up and read out his heart, his poem, his I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by madness and the crowd…went into ecstasy. They felt him. They understood him. They clapped and cheered and shouted, egging him on, begging him to go on, because the words resonated in the room, in their souls.
Dean knew that feeling. He remembered it. It rose up in him now, causing his eyes to water. He thought that childish little part of himself had been scrubbed out, but it was there, a tiny seed suddenly bursting a shoot, deep in his chest--he slapped his hand to it, felt his heart beating wildly against his ribcage, the bone all too solid.
Do I dare? it asked. Do I dare?
Dean thought of Sam and Eileen living 2,000 miles away. Thought of the invitation to live in their guest room, watch Jack a couple times a week to help save on daycare. So his nephew could grow up knowing him. So he could be near the only family he had left.
Dean thought about how, for a dozen years now, Dr. Moseley had taught at some fancy little liberal arts college just an hour away from them.
He thought about how Charlie moved around every couple years anyway, no job holding her interest long enough, no one tying her down well enough that her own restlessness didn’t compel her to leave before long.
Who else was he beholden to? How much longer was he going to live in the shitty little house his father had died in? When was the last time he’d even felt something so strongly, that now to even recognize that he had emotion was like a waking limb, pins and needles?
It was so much better to be numb. (Courage, poor stupid heart of stone.)
He picked up the phone.
By the time he hits thirty-three, Dean's given up on the apple pie life, accepting that a serious relationship isn't in the cards for him. But when he meets Cas everything falls into place. Now he’s happily married, hopelessly in love, and they’re about to buy their first home together. It almost feels too good to be true.
It turns out it is. His world comes crashing down when he wakes to find that he’s been a subject in a virtual reality simulation gone wrong. All the years he thought he spent with Cas were actually experienced in less than a week. And when he gets out, Cas is nowhere to be found. Ignoring the possibility that Cas may not be real, he sets out to find him and convince him that it’s worth giving Dean — and their relationship — a shot in the real world.

Sam takes a deep breath and lays his hands on the table. “I think it’s time you seriously considered that Cas isn’t real.”
“Sam, don’t,” Dean says, warning him off the subject. This time, Sam doesn’t listen.
“Just hear me out and try to look at this objectively. While in a virtual reality program — specifically designed to make you happy — you met someone exactly your type, fell in love almost instantly, got married, and lived in wedded bliss. Have I got that about right?”
Dean folds his arms as he battles unease. “Yeah, so?”
“Dean.” Sam runs a hand through his hair and sighs. “Let’s set aside the fact that Valis is a solo experience and that you can’t find any proof of Cas. When’s the last time you had a relationship last more than a week? Lisa? That didn’t even last a year and the only reason it lasted as long as it did was because you were crazy about her kid.” Sam smiles sadly. “Doesn’t this perfect relationship sound a bit like wish fulfillment to you?”
Dean clenches his jaw as anger and fear battle for control. He can’t deny the truth behind Sam’s words. He’s shit at relationships. He’s always known that. Does it really make sense that someone as amazing as Cas would choose to be with him? And if he is real why haven’t they found each other? Where is he?The only possibility Dean can think of is that Cas just isn’t interested. Dean isn’t sure which is worse.
Single bachelor Dean bets he can have sex more times within a calendar year than his happily-married brother. But when Castiel - Dean’s roommate, best friend, and total virgin - asks Dean to be his First, Dean’s plan to bed numerous strangers goes up in smoke. Over the weeks, then the months, Cas becomes his go-to guy. His “fuck buddy”, if you will. But that doesn’t sound right. It doesn’t feel right. Dean was Cas’ First, but now he wants to be Cas’ Only. Now he’s gotta figure out how the heck to court a guy he’s already successfully wooed a hundred times already.

“Yeah, I wanna make this special for you,” Dean explained. “But we don’t have to make it a big deal, alright? We do the deed, and then it’s done. It’s not a big thing.”
“It’s not,” Castiel repeated, but Dean wasn’t certain if he intended those words as a question or a confirmation.
“Naw,” Dean said easily, as his heart played jump-rope inside him. “Holding onto your V-card ain’t like the movies make it out to be, Cas. Say it’s like - riding a roller-coaster. Maybe people scoff if you say you’ve never ridden one, and they’ll tell you you’re missin’ out. Maybe they’ll say, hey, I don’t see the appeal, so you go have your fun and I’ll stay here on solid ground. Maybe certain people, they’ll ride a roller-coaster a few times a week, go outta their way to visit every theme park in every state. And they tell people about that, and someone’ll say, shucks, that’s too many roller-coasters, gotta be bad for the health. Or someone else will say they’re a lucky son of a gun. Right? But just ‘cause you never rode a roller-coaster before doesn’t mean you gotta throw a party when you do.” Dean shrugged. “We can keep this casual. So long as it’s fun and safe and it makes you feel good, it’s fine.”
Castiel stared, blinking twice. “Are you the roller-coaster in this instance?”
Dean gave a wonky grin. “You wanna take a ride?”
Castiel chuckled, mouth closed. He shut his eyes, resting his forehead against Dean’s. Dean blinked a few times, then shut his eyes too, letting go of a long breath.
“Are you nervous?” Castiel asked.
“Are you?” Dean asked.
Castiel nodded, bobbing Dean’s head as he did.
“Okay.” Dean kissed him gently. “That’s okay.”
“Aren’t you meant to tell me there’s nothing to worry about?”
Dean snorted. “Plenty to worry about. STDs. Bruises. Pulled muscles. Condoms, lube. What position we’re gonna do. Whether we can satisfy each other, whether we’re compatible. What if I fart? What if I need to pee halfway through? What if it’s just /awkward/? Worst of all, what if I hurt you? What if it’s not as good as you imagined? Sex is the ultimate Repercussion Roulette, Cas. It’s crazy.”
“I dread to think that somewhere in the world there’s a roller-coaster that could give someone an STD.”
“Drop the metaphor, Cas,” Dean grumbled, making Castiel laugh, then himself too. They nuzzled each other, holding hands. Dean bit his lip, swallowing. “Truth is, I’m fucking terrified, Cas.”
“Are you sure you want—”
“Yes.” Dean squeezed his eyes tight. “You?”
“Yes.”
Dean nodded. He lifted his head, meeting Castiel’s eyes. They exhaled, still holding hands.
“Um,” Dean glanced at the couch. “Wanna try making out?”
“/Try/?” Castiel said. “Can we fail?”
Dean laughed, tipping his head invitingly. “C’mon.”

Strange things are happening in a small town in Northern Maine that had gained a reputation as the most honest town in the world in only a matter of weeks. Residents are going out of their way to confess their sins-- everything from jaywalking to murder, infidelity to true love. Sam, Dean and Cas all have their own reasons for wanting to stay far away from an honesty curse, but with Jack and his natural bluntness serving as their last line of defense, they decide to investigate. The last thing they need is another Veritas situation on their hands.
The honest little town might be enjoying their newfound liberty to speak their minds, but the cause of this particular curse might prove to be Dean and Cas’s undoing.

Dean sat at the kitchen table in the bunker, steadily plowing through a stack of pancakes. Sam had taken a pass on breakfast and decided to go out for a run instead. Jack had already come and gone, gobbling up Dean’s “mistakes” as he flipped them off the griddle, and Cas hadn’t even bothered waking up yet.
There was work to be done, even if they didn’t have a world-ending apocalyptic threat to deal with. Or even a new case to keep them occupied for the last few days. It was the perfect time to give Baby the sort of attention she’d been missing, and he’d picked up everything he needed to change her oil and give her a good wash and wax while he was at it.
He was sitting there mopping up maple syrup with a piece of bacon when Cas came shuffling in and headed right for the coffee pot. Dean’s daydream about driving Baby out into the crisp autumn sunlight, glinting through the falling leaves and sparkling in her fresh coat of wax, cut off instantly. He turned in his seat to instead cast a surprisingly similar look of bemused mirth on his grumpy and bed-headed best friend.
“Mornin’, sunshine,” Dean said, taking a sip of his coffee. “There’s pancakes and bacon on the counter.”
Cas grunted out an acknowledgement and took a fortifying gulp of coffee. He let out a contented sigh as the first rush of caffeine hit his bloodstream and redirected its magical rejuvenating powers into fetching himself some breakfast. He sat down across from Dean and almost immediately made to stand up again to refill his mug. Dean stopped him with a hand on his wrist and reached around to grab the coffee pot to refill both of their mugs. Now well into his second cup, Cas was finally ready for social interaction.
“Hello, Dean. Thank you for breakfast. It’s very good.”
Dean smirked as he returned the pot to the counter behind him. “You haven’t even tasted it yet.”
Cas blinked up at Dean like he was being dense. “You make pancakes frequently, and they’re always good. I don’t see why that would be different today.”
Dean squirmed a little in his seat and half-heartedly nodded before going right back to eating his very good pancakes. Cas took his first bite and gave a little hum of appreciation, which Dean did his best to ignore. It was hard enough controlling himself around Cas when he wasn’t being outright complimentary, and even harder when Cas looked so adorably rumpled.
His out of control feelings had only become more persistently stubborn since Cas had moved into the bunker permanently. Sure it had sucked when Cas used to always leave on some random mission or another, but continuous exposure to Cas had given Dean absolutely no respite. His biggest fear now was that one of these days Cas was gonna do something so irresistibly adorable that he’d unwittingly do something unforgivable in response. Like kiss him. Or propose. Or worse. Dean had borne this burden for so long, he wasn’t sure if it was making him stronger, or just bringing him that much closer to snapping.
