There's a start to every story, and ours begins beautifully as most do.
The Golden ones, profoundly intelligent and wonderous. The Orkin, masters of life and death, engineers of the Void, creators and controllers. The undying ones. The destroyers of the System...
The evolution of humans did not go unnoticed by the wider galaxy, gaining the attention of an alien race of subspace travelers, of conquerors. When the Orkin set their sights on Terra, they quickly settled, terraformed, and ruled over humans, beings of lower worth to them. And for centuries they ruled and expanded, never satisfied with what they already had within their grasp.
First they selectively bred the last of humanity to fit their needs, to work the land they claimed. Using advanced cloning techniques to keep the population unintelligent and subservient. They seeded them across the solar system, grunts meant to do manual work that the Golden were above. Grineer they called them, once human, but now genetically modified. Loyal and honor bound, by the blood, Kuva.
What remained of the last of the true humans were underneath both the Golden people and their creations. Some, the Orkin took as their personal guard, the Dax these were called, and like the Grineer they too were bound by Kuva, never to harm their masters. But the rest, they soon forgot their history, now fully dependent on the Golden ones, never questioning their place as the laborers of Earth and its sister Venus. Miners and field workers they were, working endlessly, tirelessly. Corpus, a name, a title, meaning Family.
Then, the Orkin became too greedy, wanting not just the Terra system, but also the neighboring Tua system too. So, they brought their best Cloning engineers and their best Scientists together to create another, to make biological machines to travel and terraform the Tau. But, something went wrong, a simple oversight by the Orkin, perhaps they didn't not notice, or perhaps it was intentional. The machines became the one thing they despised, the one thing they were made for, they longed for, ripped from them, they became sterile. The void mutilated their womb, left them seedless, stranded in a desolate place. The void was poison to them. And they anguished, and that anguish turned to rage, and they developed sentience. The Sentient turned their anger towards their creators, vowing to destroy them for what they had done, but first they had to return to Terra.
But... before their return, a miracle happened, or was it a nightmare? The Zarimain 10, a transport ship of the last remaining true human settlers slipped into a void gate. The uncontained energy and power of the Void flooded the ship, devouring all it could take. The adults, both Human and Orkin succumbed to the disease, blinded and broken. But the children. The children were able to contain the Void within them, to harness it in devastating ways. They became Gods, though the Orkin called them Devils. One particular Orkin was not deterred nor frightened of the children, of the Tenno. She vowed to raise them, to be their mother, Margolis was her name.
Margolis was not alone, her husband, Ballas supported her. But, when the Sentient returned, their parental guidance was limited, and shifted. Ballas, was an inventor, using strands of infestations that lingered in the Terra System to create powerful beings, one in particular, the Helminth strand could be used to create creatures of metal like flesh and abilities strong enough to fight against the Sentient threat. Warframes. The Orkin deceived their Dax into becoming the first of their kind, becoming infestations, becoming living weapons. However, they were too unstable, too unpredictable, too uncontrollable, so the Orkin had them shelved for now and looked for other alternatives.
One such alternative was their own previous creations. The Grineer. Amplifying the cloning process and improving their genetic modification in order to be effective at militant organization, the Grineer were no longer mindless grunts, but now an army large enough in number to throw at the Sentient force. However, this process did not come without problems, the factory process that made Grineer clones ended up rotting and mutating the DNA of each generation. More and more the clones became less human and soon amalgamations of rotten flesh and decay. Living only for a few hours before a bloody demise.
The Corpus were no less thrown into the fight either, many dying without warning. Their labor now used tenfold to collect the necessary resources to fund a war. However, the Orkin were undermined by the Corpus; the first of many. One day a Corpus feild worker, tending to his crop was gifted insight by a whisper in the wind. Idleness is death. Greed is to persist. Soon word rose of the new Tennants of the Corpus way, and soon they stole and raided the Orkin. Gaining wealth from their Golden Masters while they were preoccupied by the threat.
With now obvious way to win, desperately the Orkin council, the Seven turned to Ballas and Margolis, reopening the idea of using Warframes. Together, Ballas and Margolis build mind and body. Warframes, an uninhabited shell, powerful and armored. And the Tenno, able to connect to the Warframe within dreams, allowing them to control their Void abilities, Transference. Together, Tenno and Warframe were unstoppable, able to wipe out hundreds of Sentient in hours. Pushing back the war from the brink of total defeat.
Then the Orkin made a decision that would be their destruction.
Skeptical of the Devil Tenno, the Seven called upon Margolis, their mother. They wished to have the Tenno under their control, to become the Tenno, to destroy them. Angered at her own people, Margolis cursed the Seven, a choice that cost her life. Ballas did nothing to stop it.
With their mother killed, the Tenno turned on the Orkin, now killed Sentient, Dax, and Grineer alike. The Betrayers...
The Tenno caused mass destruction, wiping out both the Sentient and most of the Orkin race. Seizing an opportunity, the Orkin were once more undermined, this time by the Grineer. Now, with enhanced intelligence able to ask a single question, Why? Why were they subservient to the Golden? It started with one, killing an Orkin in cold blood, and kidnapping another, then it spread like wildfire. Soon Orkin had nothing left. Those still left alive fled, changing their bodies and hiding amongst the races. Now, only a handful remain, a race wiped clean out of existence.
But one day, as the dust was seemingly finally settling the Tenno just, disappeared. Frames stumbled to the ground, lifeless without their Operator. And life in the Sytem was never the same...
This is the story of Warframe, the hook that Digital Extremes has carefully crafted for the player. It's a wonderful experience, a masterclass of science fiction. However, Warframe is like the Norse World Snake, devouring it's own tail in starvation.
Filled with so much and yet so little, Warframe is designed to be likeable by any type of player, whether that's one who loves in depth lore, or someone who wants to go braindead and just hit stuff. This is one of a few major flaws in the design choice of Warframe.
As my partner is fond of saying, Warframe is a triple AAA game made by a double AA studio, and it often shows.
Like many MMORPGS Warframe is best played with a second screen nearby, it's wiki pulled up and useable at any given notice.
Warframe has in my opinion three (3) major problems, each one interconnected together.
1. The new player experience is terrible.
As a new player to Warframe this game tosses you into its world as a naked baby and refuses to give you a hand to hold. It likes to think it does, but it feels like DE helped you, a toddler, cross the street, then expects you to be able to cross the street over and over alone without getting hit by a car. Its extremely frustrating and almost instantly noticeable by new players with no previous knowledge about Warframe.
2. DE WHY ARE TWO OF THE THREE OPEN WORLDS ACESSABLE TO MR 0s?!
Warframe has three (3) open world segments, each one housing hundreds of hours of gameplay and grinding. Specifically, these areas are usually reserved for established players who have the resources and arsenal able to tackle this new challenge. However, two of the open world areas are almost immediately available to brand new players. This causes them to want to do these areas, ignoring the base game, where the actual new player experience and major story lays, for hundreds of hours of work only experienced players should be doing. Fortuna and Cetus are a major reason most players dont make it past MR 10.
3. Hidden mechanics.
While Warframe is generally pretty straightforward when it comes to how it's modding system works (if your not a meta hugger), there is plenty that Warframe doesn't teach you. One example being its drop table rotation system. Unlike most looters, where it's a percentage change every time you kill/loot/do a mission to get a part or item, warframe works on an A B C or A A B C rotation every five minutes or each wave/objective, where each rotation has it's own drop table and percentages. And absolutely nowhere in game does this get explained.
Meaning, if you need a part from C rotation, you must play at minimum 20 minutes of a survival mission, for a chance to get said part. And if you dont, you then have to play another 20 minutes to try again, for a total of 40 minutes for a percent chance.
Meanwhile DE actively discourages players from "endurance running" missions. Making enemies exponentially harder to deal with, penalizing players who reach a mission timer/wave caps with bans, and not giving mission rewards to players who afk, even for a few minutes for one reason or another.
This caused a really toxic disconnect between players and the game, where they're often forced to play a single mission for really long periods at a time, while also being punished because they're playing one mission for a very long time.
And it's not that these aren't easy fixes, or at least fixable. But, I do give DE the benefit of the doubt, because they already know about these problems and are an extremely small development team.
So, all in all, Warframe is an amazing game worth experiencing but it's new player experience is literal hell.
Just my two cents on an already overly talked about issue in this community.
I for real agree with DK here. DE needs to stop trying to push out as many Warframes as possible and start focusing on pushing out two or three really fleshed out Warframes with solid designs, abilities, and lore. My favorite quests we're Octavia's Anthem, Chains of Harrow, even Saya's Vigil!! I loved the frames for the lore they brought and the in-depth design they had for their respective Warframes. It feels like ever since Garuda's release with Fortuna, the Warframes are just being pumped out left and right. I've got no desire to play Baruuk or Hildryn, nor do I feel like grinding out either sets of parts through the or heists/toroid farming.
In short, DE needs to focus on QUALITY, not QUANTITY.
