“Cannonball” had what one critic called “the most unfriendly radio intro ever.” A strange bass slide, a lonely hi-hat, then Kim Deal singing like a kid making noises with her mouth.

The Breeders told me they never imagined radio would touch it. Instead, listeners sang along with every weird little sound. Thirty years after Last Splash, “Cannonball” still sounds like a hit that slipped through a side door while nobody was guarding it.
