Five books that influenced me as a writer + Bonus: shows and movies!
The Book Thief by Markus Zusak
This book changed my brain chemistry somewhere around high school. It has a heavy impact on my writing style and some of the more abstract imagery I use. The unique style is something I think about constantly.
Twilight by Stephanie Meyer
This was my first “romance” I read around early high school. The yearning! The danger! The drama! As an adult I recognize how wild this book is, but it definitely sparked a lot for me.
Dead until Dark by Charlaine Harris
I read all of the Southern Vampire Mysteries books that were available in 2011 for the first time and skipped my college classes for like two weeks to read them (oops). I was already a big fan of True Blood (still am) and the books have been a huge influence on my inner monologue style and character development!
The Hunger Games Trilogy by Suzanne Collins
The Hunger Games books are a huge influence in my writing as far as pathetic (affectionate) men and unreliable narrators go. I credit Suzanne with teaching me incredible pacing and how to see every day things through a character’s unique eyes and life experience.
The Love Hypothesis by Ali Hazelwood
I got out of college and immediately stopped writing/reading (english degree struggles). The Love Hypothesis was one of the first fiction books that I picked up in years and immediately got me into romance and inspired me to start writing again! If I am in a reading or writing slump, Ali will always get me out of it.
Bonus: Fan fiction is the only fiction I read for years after college, so this being adapted fan fic and fan fic in general have had a huge influence on me!
Shows and movies that influence me
Timer, The Princess Bride, School of Rock, Drop Dead Diva, The Borgias, 10 Things I Hate About You
One of these books had a direct influence on Winks & Windows. Can you guess which?
