Deadly class ending rant
Alright so last deadly class chapter is A Fond Farewell. Basically theres a seemingly random timeskip to Marcus, (the depressing cynical mc) and his future. Its basically told through flashbacks that he led a riot through Kings Dominion, the assassin school he attended that killed a lot of his friends. But it wasn’t the riot that killed Head Master Lin, the evil principal. It was an earthquake that happened during the riot, pretty much ending Kings Dominion overall.
Marcus goes through life, at first continuing his cycle of cynicism, acting as a hitman, as he meets with eventually a lot of former classmates and friends. He wants out of the assassin game, so he helps his highschool crush into rehab and helps her kill her brother and take over his mafia. He does all this in hopes of her wanting to leave with him, its easier to break a habit with someone by her side. But Saya is too focused on her goal and rejects marcus’s proposal of leaving together. He eventually runs into Maria, his girlfriend back at Kings Dominion, and starts going out with her again
Heres where I think it loses most people. Marcus and Maria live a… shockingly normal life. Depressing, as Marcus and Maria promise each other never to go back to the life of Assassins and to break the cycle so theyre super broke. But they have each other. It goes from a cynical action packed theme to a slice of life story of 2 people trying to move on and break the cycle. Marcus ends up writing a book about a sci fi alcoholic and it ends up as a TV show on the crime network and a shitty movie. Theres a whole issue where about filming a commercial for Honda about how punk rock their car is and Marcus’s dilemna on it.
The ending gets a bit of the old vibe back. A couple of their old classmates are out murdering all the other Kings Dominion ex students. It ends with Marcus and Maria going back into action one last time. It lasts barely half an issue, and they expose their old classmates on live TV. And they live happily ever after
See a lot of people are unhappy with the timeskip because it takes place in the middle of a story arc, which is understandable why theyre upset, but we gotta look at the context. The issue where the timeskip happens comes out a year after the previous one, due the beloved event COVID. Its hard to continue a story after a year, and COVID also changed a lot of peoples perspective, which includes the writer, Rick Remender. From there Remender takes to using the story as a platform for a more hopeful message. Theres even a bit of meta commentary about it in the comic
After Marcus wrote his scifi series about an alcoholic, Lone Star, he struggles to write an ending. He initally wants to write the main character ends with having a similar fate to his dead friends from Kings Dominion, killed in senseless violence. But Maria talks him out of it. Talking about how the world has enough bad in it already. Lone Star is Marcus’s platform, his podium which gives him a responsibility to not spread cynicism but hope. And I think this is a realization Remender came to as well during his COVID, Deadly Class is his platform, and rather than continue to speak through Marcus’s cynical filter, he could show how someone like him could change and see the good in the world.
So yeah the endings controversial because people expected an action packed ending to an action packed series and I can’t blame them. But I see Remenders change of heart, and the end lesson he imbued infinitely more valuable, and satisfying
