It’s a statement that twists itself in his throat, barbed wire wrapping around his vocal chords, and he tastes the blood before he feels the heaviness of the words, pushing his mouth open and apart. Marcus is a bleeding heart with switchblades for fingers, trying to reach out for something to save himself from exsanguination. And he’s not sure again, this time, if she’ll be the blade or the bullet and whether it will be pain or bliss that will finally land him in oblivion. 

And the silence lingers and her stare is as intimidating and as inviting as that first night they’ve met. And it feels more striking now, knowing who she was, what they’ve done, together and alone and standing across from her no longer the nameless kid on the street hovering at the edge of the bridge. He swallows smoke when she smiles, asphyxiating his lungs and his thoughts, leaving him blank as his heart raced. The question is so certain, a slash against his throat, expecting him to pour the words out better than his mouth ever could. 

Fuck, is all the coherency he could manage. Not even sure if he had meant what he said or the words were just words after all. A compilation of consonants and vowels slipping past his defenses because it’s her and she’s here and her lips are on his. And he’s boy with no name and man with no game all at once. Until she’s pulling back, leaving him hanging on the tip of her lips, breathless and reeling again at the question she seems to fling at him faster than her blade could slash at his skin. 

The challenge laid at his feet. 

A laugh trickles past his lips, followed by the ghost of a smile. He wonders if its just the taste of her lips or the cigarettes for dinner and the cheap beer for dessert that’s making him dizzy enough that he answers: “ Fuck you and then figure out the rest tomorrow. “
