Asami laughed at Karuna’s gesture. She had really missed her friend. There weren’t many people she could trust and Karuna always rolled with the heiress’s quirky humor.
“The park it is,” Asami agreed as she followed the slightly shorter woman. It was nice to be back in the busy city, around familiar sounds and sights. “I missed this place. I always think I can stay away, maybe start somewhere new but the idea never sticks…I guess after my dad…I needed a change…” Asami confessed quietly, so only Karuna could hear.
The officer had missed the way the non-bender’s smile flashed and the giggle which usually accompanied. There were many other good people in the city, but no one could take the place of Asami.
“Something about this city,” Karuna agreed, gazing at the buildings ans skyscrapers just beyond the lush green hedges within the park. “I remember when I first came here and wanted nothing to do with this place.” The young woman had been so used to more traditional villages and capitals that the bustling city overwhelmed her for the first year. “There’s so much to see, do and feel, I guess it just grows on you.”
Grey eyes offered a sympathetic look and her lips turned down. “I heard. I’m very sorry. Losing a parent is...awful.” Karuna stated the truth and took another deep breath. “You know, they say you’ll out live them over and over when you’re a kid, but when that time comes you don’t want it to be true.” Her head was dipped down slightly as the two continued their stroll down the sidewalk. “The hardest thing I’ve ever had to do was say goodbye to my father.” While that day had come and gone many years ago, Karuna would never forget the agonizing emptiness it brought with it. “If you ever need anything, don’t hesitant. I’m here for you.”
