welcome to the twenty-seventh fic rec friday! where, on friday, i rec five of my favourite fics.  

1. Toaster by @admiralcanthackett

Lance cannot for the life of him think of the word in English. ~ Hunk is used to it, Keith is not and realizes Lance is more capable than he first thought.

polyglot lance loml. there was a point in time when admiralcanthackett (once thenakednymph) when pumped out more voltron fics than i did, and fae were fucking AWESOME at it. i was hooked on faer every word. im pretty sure i bookmarked almost every fic fae wrote!! this one is sweet because its very team as family, and lance appreciative. 

2. Raindrops on roses by @zipadeea

"Lance, you can't just add 'space' to everything, just because we're in, well, space." "Oh c'mon, it works, though! Spaceship, Space Mall, Space Dad-," "What?" "Shiro is our Space Dad, Keith. Obviously. Sheesh, I thought you were smart."

The paladins call Shiro Space Dad. Shiro knows this. Here's four times they say it out loud, and the one time Shiro's finally okay with it.

yall remember how popular baby lance was?? like him getting deaged by a monster ray or whatever?? well i do. there used to be this comic that floated around about it too and it was fucking adorabale. well this one is so fucking cute it makes you yell a little!! the fic is actually focused on shir as a space dad, and his relationships with the paladins, and you can really see this young adult growing into himself via the love he has for the people on his team. i fuckn love this fic

3. Video Chats by @tomminowrites

Not long after leaving to join the Blades, Keith stops by the castleship to catch up with Voltron.The visit was going normally, until the Red paladin lets slip that he's been video calling one of the paladins fairly regularly - unknown to rest of the team.

poor fucking lance 💀 he gets HUMILIATED in this one. his whipped ass gets absolutely dunked on and deservedly so. i literally love them

4. where & how we’ll land by xintong

The first time Keith meets Lance is also the first time they kiss. It all goes downhill for him from there.

i love this one (childhood friends to lovers always Gets to me) but the first meeting has me in tears bc lance’s first appearance was basically just this: 

and that is his character. so it was perfect

5. Something Made, Something Given by @ardett

Shiro notices the bandages on Lance’s fingers.

Summary: A dangerous mission becomes even moreso when Lance is turned into a child with no recollection of his older self in the middle of it. Keith has never been good with kids and that certainly isn’t going to change now. Somehow though he’s got to convince Lance — who doesn’t speak a word of English and is staring at Keith with too wide, too scared of eyes — to come with him, get them both out of the Galran base now crawling with sentries alive, and then, assuming they get that far, figure out how to change Lance back.

Story snippet:

Keith slowly, slowly knelt down — looming over Lance in armor probably wasn’t the best impression — and tried to smile. “Hola,” he greeted softly, knowing at least that and Lance’s babble came to an immediate stop, his eyes widening. Encouraged, Keith said it again. “Hola, Lance,” and Lance’s eyes widened even further.

“¿Sabes mi nombre?”

Keith could guess at that one.

“Sí,” Keith said, nodding his head. “We’re…”

Friends?

Were they though?

Keith’s stomach clenched at the fact he didn’t know the answer to that. They were at least teammates, but he didn’t know that word and it wouldn’t mean much to Lance anyways. Friends would send the right message and at least ensure Lance’s cooperation.

“Amigos,” he said with a decisive nod even if it didn't feel quite right. “We’re amigos, Lance. I’m,” he tapped his chest, “Keith.”

“ Keith?” Lance repeated and Keith nodded. “¿Somos amigos, Keith?” Lance asked, and while he looked confused he at least no longer looked scared and Keith would count that as a win.

“Keith,” Keith said again, tapping his chest.

Lance grinned, tears clearing, and tapped his own chest. “Lance!”

His eyes widened and he looked down, no doubt realizing he had armor too, and when he looked back up his eyes were sparkling.

“Keith, Keith!” he was on his feet and grabbing hold of Keith’s arm and practically vibrating on his feet, more words too fast for Keith to try to catch coming out of his mouth, and while Keith had no idea what exactly was being said Lance was excited about it and that was what mattered.

 “Stop crying,” Shiro said with utter despair lacing his voice as he cradled the baby wrapped in soft blue blankets, rocking him gently in his arms, “please stop crying…”

 But Lance paid no attention to Shiro’s words and continued wailing, for reasons unknown to Shiro himself, and it was tearing at his nerves.  Humming softly an old song he barely remembered, he wondered how long it’d take for Coran and Allura to finally come up with an antidote that would turn Lance back to normal.

Throwback Thursday (Double Header*):  Quarantine and Sleep Well, My Son

It’s Throwback Thursday! ♥ Maybe it’s new to you, an old favorite… but hope you enjoy and if you do as always please do drop a comment ♥

*I made a bunch of these pre-scheduled so I wouldn’t forget but uh, I had Quarantine going today. And given what’s going on I thought I’d post a second, less health-involved fic too. But do note Quarantine does have a happy ending and hoping all the best for everyone dealing with the Coronavirus. Stay safe ♥

Quarantine

Summary:  An alien ship crashes on Earth and Lance and Hunk are the first responders to board and look for survivors. But they don’t find people in need of help. They find bodies. What started as a rescue turns into a fight for survival and the team can only watch in horror outside of the quarantined ship as two of their own begin to lose the battle. And it begs the question: when it comes to choosing between potentially saving a loved one or for sure saving Earth what is a Defender of the Universe to do?

Story snippet:

Allura and Coran echoed the same and then it was just Keith at the monitor although a few other Garrison personnel were visible in the background.

Lance had sat up more in Hunk’s embrace, throat still aching but his head a little better now that he’d gotten his bearings, and with that came clarity.

And he could see that behind the thin lips and narrowed eyes that Keith was…

Keith was scared.

“You’re really worried, huh, mullet?” Lance asked gently, hoping the moniker would lessen the perception of the inquiry.

As he predicted Keith’s still cheeks flushed red.

“Of course,” Keith muttered, eyes averted to the side. “We all are.”

Lance hummed in acknowledgement but he knew that wasn’t all of it.

Keith looked up with a glare. “What does that mean?”

“What does what mean?”

“What you just did!”

“What did I just do?”

“Guys,” Hunk bemoaned.

Lance could tell he wasn’t actually upset and he knew Keith wasn’t actually angry.

He welcomed this small break of normal.

“That, that noise.”

Lance whistled.

“That wasn’t it and you know it.”

Lance smacked his lips.

Ugh, still dry.

“Lance!”

“What noise did I make then?” he asked, tilting his head.

Keith glowered and what followed was the angriest hum Lance had ever heard, almost like a hornet’s nest.

“Needs work,” Lance told him, “but good job for effort.”

“Lance,” somehow Keith made his name sound like a curse.

Sleep Well, My Son

Summary:  A tiny accident becomes literal when Lance is turned into a child with no recollection from his older self. Coran has hopes the effects will be relatively short-term, but in the meantime he has a scared child that needs both reassurance and care. And while Coran might not have had the chance to be a father… he feels like one now.

Story snippet:

He tried to push the thought away before it could take root, but as he stared at the small, dark hand in his he could see it, he could see her in the boy’s large eyes, in his complexion and deep colored hair.

This could have been what his son looked like if life had not been so cruel.

Coran felt his smile growing shaky and he forced himself to not think on it, to focus on the young human child who was looking at him with an innocence that Coran knew still lived on in the teenager despite all he had seen and done.

“There we go,” Coran said, his own voice thick and he swallowed heavily to clear it. Lance cocked his head to the side, concern mixing with his confusion and the other small hand lifted up to brush at Coran’s cheek.

Coran was surprised to see it pull back with something glistening on the tiny fingers.

He…

He had been crying.

“¿Estás bien?” came the inquiry, the boy’s voice small.

Coran knew that one, a familiar phrase between Lance and Number Two.

“Bien,” he said, almost feeling a chuckle as Lance’s eyes widened with surprise. “I’m sorry, my boy. I did not mean to worry you. I am all right. Bien. I promise.”

Lance gave a small nod.

And then he gasped.

But it was not the scared inhale of before or the prelude to a sob.

It was excitement.

“¡Tus orejas! ¡Son puntiagudas!”

Coran did chuckle then as he could feel where the bright gaze had been drawn. “You think my ears look funny, don’t you? Here, have a closer look.”

New Fic: Sleep Well, My Son

I needed something fluffy today (it’s been a long week and yes, I know it’s only Tuesday (morning at that)). So have some fluff thanks to a prompt from one of my Patreons requesting a kid!fic with Lance and Coran (with a nod to Coran's backstory from As Color Fades Away). And if you’re feeling kind please leave a comment on the fic with what you enjoyed about the fic. I really appreciate it ♥

Story snippet: 

“¿D-dónde estoy?” came a higher pitched, tear-filled question in a language Coran knew was one Lance spoke but not one he himself knew.

“L--”

He tried to speak the boy’s name but Lance cut him off again, words rapidfire and growing in pitch. “¿D-dónde estoy? ¿Dónde está Mamá? ¿Quién eres tú?” He stumbled backwards, tripping over his jeans and sneakers and landed with a thump on his backend.

The dark head swiveled right and left, the boy’s distress only growing as unfamiliar settings looked back and as the gaze refocused on Coran the man felt his heart twist as tears began to trickle over.

This was not what he had wanted.

Coran very slowly bent at the knee to bring himself more to the child’s height and the boy scuttled backwards, bare feet squeaking on the floor, until he hit the kitchen counter.

The sob of fear wrenched Coran’s heart further.

He had to fix this.
