Remembering Neal Cassady on this birthday. HB Neal!  Born on this day in 1926, Salt Lake City UT.

Neal Cassady young handsome age 29 checking out North Beach used car lot (with his love of that year Natalie Jackson, Immortalized by Kerouac as Rosie Buchanan in Desolation Angels)  Bay Area Johnny Appleseed of pot from early 1950’s, he work as conductor on Southern Pacific Railroad, averted train crash as brakeman years earlier, braking his ankle, collected insurances, bought his family a ranch-house in Los Gatos down the peninsula, gambled madly--disastrously!--at horse racetrack, worked painfully on “The First Third” his autobiographical manuscript, visited me overnight on Polk and Montgomery Streets.  Sometime March 1955, San Francisco. Neal Cassady with his girlfriend at the time, Anne Murphy, on a trip to Bolinas with Charlie Plymell and Allen, Fall 1963. “When we stopped at a convenience store, I asked Allen to borrow his camera to take this shot as if nothing had happened and we went for a roller coaster ride. Neal was all smiles and otherwise had a nice time lying on the hills overlooking the shore at Bolinas. Allen was still in his Whitmanesque/India mode then.” (Photo & Caption: Charles Plymell)

Allen, Neal and Charles Plymell were all roommates that fall on Gogh Street, San Francisco.  Allen only had just returned from 2 years in India the previous month. Neal would have been fresh off parole having served two years in San Quentin three years prior for a small amount of marijuana possession. He would soon join Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters on the cross country psychedelic bus ride.
