Celebrating & remembering Carolyn Cassady who was born this day in Lansing MI, 1923. In a roundabout way, Carolyn was the reason Allen moved west to San Francisco, since she brought Neal with her, settling in Los Gatos, inducing Allen to follow. And within a few short years in the Bay Area, Allen wrote Howl, America, Sun Flower Sutra, & read with the Six Gallery poets and published his first collection of poetry. Neal Cassady with cigarette young & vigorous age 29 with salesman noontime surveying North Beach used car lot, he needed new wheels. Bay area Johnny Appleseed of pot from early 1950s, he worked as conductor on Southern-Pacific Railroad, averted train crash as brakeman years earlier, crushing his ankle, collected insurance bought his family a ranch-house in Los Gatos, gambled madly & disastrously at horse racetrack, wrote painfully with pencil at his The First Third autobiographical manuscript, visited me overnight in my rooms on Polk then Montgomery Streets, San Francisco. Sometime March 1955.

Painting number 333,333 was actually 33 separate works done by artists I admire and friends of the One Thousand Thousand project. I was supposed to have sent everyone a painting in return but in addition to the fact that I'm really lazy I mainly just hate to see them go. But I have them sorted out and everyone can expect the exchange works to be there soon. It's something great having an office full of work from artists I like so well but it's time to send these things back out to their new homes. You can see perfect pieces from @jaimederringer and @scrapatorium at the very end of this. Day 30 #AusYAChallenge features Australian diversity and think both of these books are fantastic in that respect. #thefirstthird and #LookingforAlibrandi are both about Australian families who have emigrated from different countries, featuring the Greek and Italian cultures.
