Simon Darlovksy says to me “Jack I’ve been looking for you for two days!  Where you been?  What you doin? Dyav any dreams lately? Anything great? Dany girls loosen your belt? Jack!  Look at me! Jack!” He makes me look at him, his intense wild face with that soft hawk nose and his blond hair crew cut now (before a wild shock)  and his thick serious lips (like Irwin’s) but tall and lean and really only just outa high school -- “I’ve got a million things to tell you! All about love!  I’ve discovered the secret of beauty! It’s love! Peter Du Peru, Neal Cassady & Natalie Jackson horsing around maybe Sunday walk above Broadway Tunnel, Neal playing hooky from his wife Carolyn & kids in Los Gatos to stay with Natalie at my place. Du Peru eccentric North Beach remittance man was writ by Kerouac as “Richard de Chili, the Mysterious...with his low-spoken incomprehensible remarks,” (Desolation Angels.) Jack Kerouac outside W.S.Burroughs' doorway by Villa Muniria garden wall.Jack stayed in roof-terrace room 2 flights upstairs from Bill, with vast view of the bay across toward Gibraltar, he'd preceded me & Peter Orlovsky on Yugoslav freighter from N.Y. by a month, helped type Bill’’s Interzone and Word Hoard mss. assembled same time as Naked Lunch mss. letters I brought with me. Jack left for Paris a week and half after our arrival, On the Road was published earlier [sic] that year, he'd already written a dozen book "Visions" "Dreams" & "Blues" up to "Desolation Angels" Part I. Late May Tangier, [sic] 1961. [This is actually April 1957, and On the Road was still to be published coming Fall. Neal Cassady young handsome age 29 checking out North Beach used car lot (with his love of that year Natalie Jackson, Immortalized by Kerouac as Rosie Buchanan in Desolation Angels)  Bay Area Johnny Appleseed of pot from early 1950’s, he work as conductor on Southern Pacific Railroad, averted train crash as brakeman years earlier, braking his ankle, collected insurances, bought his family a ranch-house in Los Gatos down the peninsula, gambled madly--disastrously!--at horse racetrack, worked painfully on “The First Third” his autobiographical manuscript, visited me overnight on Polk and Montgomery Streets.  Sometime March 1955, San Francisco. Gary Snyder in his backyard hut, Berkeley, I’d met him that month referred by Kenneth Rexroth - he was studying Chinese, preparing for residence in Kyoto Zen monastery a year later, rode bicycle, prepared tea, showed me poems in springboard binder, I recognized W.C.
