Dear Former Friend,
You’ve wasted my time for the last time. I’m done with your passive aggression. I’m done with how one-sided this has always been, always me making the effort for you and never the other way around. I’m done with your criticisms. I’m done with you.
This isn’t spite, because I don’t wish you ill. I am indifferent about where you may go from here. This isn’t regret, because I know that all of my efforts towards you were not wasted. My actions have led me to this moment of realization, finally being able to prioritize my own needs. This letter is simply the best way I can think of to make my intentions clear, to hold myself accountable. Even though I’m writing online instead of confronting you face to face (because you do not mean enough to me to get invested in an argument), even though I know it’s possible that I might be tempted in the future to let you back into my life (because you can sometimes be charming, and I can sometimes be desperate), this letter is one way I can resolve to myself that I will do my best to move on from you. I want to take all the energy that I have invested in you and invest it in myself instead.
I deserve better than you. My time is too valuable to waste on you. My choices are valid, and I do not need to justify them to you. This choice will mean fewer friends in my life for a while, but I know it’s the right choice because I am better when I’m not with you. I am grateful for this opportunity to be myself, to be without you. I am eager to move forward, because I know that trusting myself and pursuing my joys will only bring new people and better opportunities into my life.
This rough draft letter might become the lyrics to the song, the rhythm that buzzes in my head when I think of you. If I do write that song, I know you’ll never listen to it. And I’ll be too busy living my life to even care.
