I originally thought Death Gavan was undead or something, given the armour damage and the name, but according to the Project Red wiki (not the most reliable source I know), the damage to Death Gavan’s suit is from him ripping out the armour's security systems and such. Essentially, he has jailbroken his Gavan suit and modified it to run on nega emorgy energy. He has done the same to his Gavarion Trigger and Cosmo Gavarion, which is a really cool thing for a villain to do and is pretty metal if I do say so.
