105 DeathScribe 2012 - Comparing Notes at the End of the World by Christopher M Walsh dir Robert Kauzlaric for WildClaw Theatre at the Mayne Stage. Wound up back at DeathScribe but for the first time not as a writer, but as a performer. Comparing Notes is the story of three people sharing their stories after a supernatural apocalypse has destroyed everything they ever knew. It’s much less nerve wracking being a performer than it is an author at DeathScribe. Plus once I was done, I could relax, drink and enjoy. And while Mr. Walsh didn’t win that year (he would win in 2014 for his piece Fracture Zone, which I have yet to hear but I assume is about some horrible penis accident) it was a great deal of fun. But congratulations to Mr. Joseph Zettlemaier for his piece Fish Story for the win that year. 102 DeathScribe 2011 - Legacy by Chris Hainsworth dir Carolyn (Klein) Kruse for WildClaw Theatre. We end 2011 with my last time as a finalist in DeathScribe. The piece is Legacy, a small atmospheric 3 hander which was blown out of the water by the insanely lush Alabama Mermaid, by Jessica Wright Buha, beautifully realized by Carolyn Hoerdemann and executed by her cast, Seeking Wonderland, and the foley artistry of Ele Matelan, Aly Amidei and Krista Soli Foster. I’m very proud of Legacy and the work that was done on it. But man, we didn’t stand a chance. They went big, and I went home. 100 DeathScribe 2010 - The D’Arque House by Chris Hainsworth dir Nic Dimond. Found myself back at DeathScribe, and we got the winning team (mostly) back together. This time at the new fangled refurbished Mayne Stage (RIP) in Rogers Park, which is a 7 minute walk from my place. And it went great, but if DeathScribe will teach you anything, it’s hard to beat rednecks dealing with the supernatural. The Change in Buckett County is a brilliant piece written by David Schimdt and directed by my Artist director Carolyn Klein, with great performances by Anderson Lawfer and John Ferrick. The whole piece is my rumination on grief and guilt, and how we survive loss. 97 DeathScribe 2009 - Remembrance written by Chris Hainsworth dir Nic Dimond for WildClaw Theatre’s Annual DeathScribe Festival of Audio Horror Plays at the Music Box Theatre. I submitted two scripts for DeathScribe 2009, Remembrance and Two Flat, and both got selected because it was a blind selection process, so they had to choose just one and they chose Remembrance. Remembrance was originally written as a Strawdog Hit Factory Late Night in conjunction with Strawdog’s production of Red Noses, by Peter Barnes. Red Noses was about people living through the Black Plague, so I knew I wanted to write something involving a plague. Then I saw something on 60 Minutes about people who remember every single thing that ever happened to them, and that terrified me, and I married the two ideas together. So the story is about a doctor who creates a retrovirus to rewire the brain and create new pathways around damaged areas to help Alzheimer Patients regain their memories, and then followed that idea to its absolute worst conclusion. And it won! Nic Dimond selected the piece to direct and pulled together a team of all-stars and really did a wonderful job. I’m still immensely proud of this piece. Of course you can’t have good without a little bad, so my winning meant that Katie’s piece she directed, Skinny Man by Scott T. Barsotti, which was also great, didn’t win. 93 Deathscribe 2008 - Career Day by Christopher Hainsworth dir by Tom Mula for WildClaw Theatre. WildClaw started in 2008 with their inaugural production of The Great God Pan by Arthur Machen, adapted and directed by Charley Sherman. The next thing they produced was DeathScribe, a playwriting competition, focusing on ten-minute horror pieces in the audio drama format. So they would accept submissions from all over the globe, winnow it down to five selections, hire directors in town who would subsequently cast the pieces, and then present them over the course of the evening. The first DeathScribe was held on a Monday night in October at The Music Box Theatre. A piece I wrote was selected as a finalist, something I initially wrote for a Strawdog Late Night Hit Factory Presents, called Career Day. Simple setup, the antichrist is in school and his dad show up for career day. The DeathScribe crew did a pretty good job with it, although it’s not my best work. It’s also more humorous than scary so I’m not surprised it didn’t win.
