i have a real hankering for some winteriron misunderstandings fics, the angstier the better. do you have any under your belt, adi?
absolutely!! some of these fics aren’t tagged misunderstandings but i added them because they’re angsty, i hope thats okay!! i’ve also thrown in a bit of identity porn because technically those are misunderstandings as well right?
Conclusions: @striving-artist (part of a series) (i rec’d part one of this series in another fic rec list that asked for angst, but this part deals more with misunderstandings so i thought i’d rec it here)
Bucky spent months trying not to think about what he really wanted with Tony. Not while he was hurting. Not while he was silent. Now Tony is back, and Bucky can't stop seeing how his presence pushes Tony back into quiet.
Tony spent months trusting no one but Bucky to see how bad it was. Now he's back, and he hates that Bucky will see that he's not as recovered as he pretends.
Pining For Lost Innocence: @iam93percentstardust (just a note that this is an a/b/o fic, in case that makes anyone squicky)
After a whirlwind romance, Bucky is dumped by his fiancé, Brock. He ends up spending the next year living with Tony, one of his closest friends, moping first over his breakup and then over his unrequited feelings for Tony. When his sister’s wedding is announced for the same day he was left at the altar, he realizes that he’s not ready to go alone. He asks Tony to go with him- just as friends. But Bucky’s not the only one pining in their apartment and his sister’s ready for him to realize that.
The Gift of Care: @ali-aliska
Freshly back to the States, James Barnes has a lot to learn about his new world, so he watches and learns and finds himself slowly falling for one Tony Stark, who always appears miserable when he has to spend time at the Compound with his former teammates, but who still takes the time to treat James with kindness.
James sets out on a mission to take care of Tony, make Tony’s life easier in whatever small ways he can. An unfortunate misunderstanding nearly ruins that, but in the end, James still reaps the rewards of his secret good deeds.

Worst Case: @/PrinceOfBadassery
When Bucky applies for a program for a new type of prosthesis he doesn't have much hope of getting into it, but then a doctor who only introduced himself as Tony turns up and flips his world upside down. Not only does he end up with a new arm but also a crush that is hard to ignore as time goes on.
For the ITAB prompt: imagine no powers au where tony is still a rich businessman and meets ptsd vet bucky when fitting his prosthetic. bucky doesn't realise tony is tony stark.
Sweater Weather: @/ezazahaz
For WritingThroughTheMess’s prompt:
High school AU - Adorable, sweater-wearing nerd Tony has been pining over Bucky Barnes from afar for years. When, on a dare from Rhodey, Tony starts to act on these feelings, Bucky is certain that he's trying to gain the favour of his best friend Steve, because why on Earth would someone as kind and intelligent and rich as Howard Stark's son be interested as someone as rough as Bucky?
He's drunk and there's a really hazy decade in the nineties that Rhodey looks pained when he even thinks about that says doing shit when he's drunk is a bad idea.
There's also a new building on MIT campus and a yearly donation that supports that theory.
But MIT and Rhodey are far away and that clunky black flip phone is not, and he snarls as he snatches it up and punches in the mess.
It takes almost five minutes because the tech is obsolete and he is drunk but he does and he smiles at it, viciously pleased.

Tony Stark returns home from Afghanistan to find his life turned upside down. Pepper and Rhodey are gone and he is alone. As he tries to piece back together his life he is kidnapped once again and sold away to the highest bidder.Bucky Barnes hates Tony Stark. His whole squad survived their tour overseas only to have a Stark missile misfire on American soil. He alone survived the blast but was left with only one arm as a result. The metal replacement arm Stark dropped at the hospital malfunctions the first time he's back in the field. Discharged from the army with no where to go he begins transporting probably stolen art for an auction house. When he discovers his latest job is not art but instead the human he hates most in the world he must make a choice to help the bound man or to look the other way and deliver him to his buyer
people like you must be the world’s loneliest creatures: @/avienexjel
tony stark is rich and popular and an arrogant asshole. in other words: his iq rivals einstein's, he's slept with most of his "friends" at least once, and he's so fucking lonely that sometimes he wakes up in the middle of the night and cries into the cold sheets on the empty side of the bed.
it's no different at SHIELD boarding school, at first. half the student body hates him, half want to be him, nothing new. that is, until tony accidentally breaks james barnes's prosthetic arm, and he suddenly finds the most vulnerable pieces of himself surfacing whether he wants them to or not.
Tony wasn’t quite sure how he’d gotten here, here being tied to a chair with a cut above his eye releasing a steady stream of blood down his face. His ribs hurt and he was at least 87% sure that his left knee was broken. When he flexed it gently the pain was almost unbearable. Okay, make that 99% sure. It was without a doubt broken - which would have been 100%. Fuck; his brain was broken now too, as well several of as his fingers. To be honest, his ankles didn’t feel great either.
How the fuck had he ended up here?
Sure, he’d always known that Bucky Barnes wasn’t the angel Tony wanted to believe that he was, but he definitely hadn’t known it was going to lead him here.
As it turns out, Tony's angelic boyfriend was actually the head of one of the most notorious mobs in New York. A fact discovered when Tony was kidnapped by a rival mob. Well. He hadn't seen that one coming.
limpet: @/spqr (there is an age difference in this where Tony is 16 and Bucky is 20, in case that makes anyone squicky. however the age difference is paramount to the narrative)
Last summer, Tony stole one of Bucky’s sweaters.
It’s green, dark green, with thin navy stripes. It was too big on Bucky, so on Tony it’s almost comical. Except it’s not funny at all, the way Bucky’s stomach swoops when he sees him in it.
