Anyone who calls the estate tax the “death tax” is lying to you. There is no such thing as a “death tax.” This is the weird and dishonest name Newt Gingrich started using 25 years ago in an attempt to trick gullible people into thinking he was fighting for a tax break for them when, in fact, he was fighting for a tax break for the wealthiest heirs which would be paid for by hiking taxes on everyone else. The estate tax does not tax death. Nor does it tax the dead. It is an inheritance tax, and it is owed only by those receiving the windfall of an inheritance on the very largest estates. It is neither a burden nor a hardship for anyone paying it.
