Question about Norse afterlife. Where would someone go who died a violent death but not in battle (like a car accident) or someone who killed themselves?
I'd say they'd go to their ancestors by virtue of the fact they'd be buried at home.
Before the introduction of Christian ideas, the Norse seemed to believe their afterlives were determined solely by their final resting place, and that all afterlives were good because you'd get to be with family no matter what (they viewed their gods as family). Whether someone died by murder, suicide, or in any other violent way didn't change where they went.
However, something like a violent death would influence whether or not someone became an angry revenant after death. We know the Norse believed their dead could become restless if their needs weren't met or if they died without proper closure, which is why they practiced post-mortem care as part of ancestor veneration.
