If having two of the exact same blouse in different colors isn’t debater chic, then I don’t know what is.
My ever so lovely debate group chat.
Topic: How far can you stray from canon before your character is actually an OC?
Ricky: You’re all a bunch of-of fucking nerds, sitting around on you’re computers all day, writing largely tawdry crap- do y-you really need to be a debate club too?
Jeanie: Wow - that’s pretty harsh... Considering you wouldn’t exist if I wasn’t one of those nerds.
Ricky: ...True enough... But this question is sort of arbitrary, isn’t it? I-I mean, once you run out of base material, you have to fill in with your own ideas, right? Pretty much original a-at that point.
Jeanie: I think perspective plays in a lot too. If people don’t share your opinion on how a character you are portraying behaves, they are going to consider you an OC, no matter what name you give your character. However, if they agree with your headcanons, they will say you are playing ‘true to that character.’
Ricky: Well then, wh-what do you consider me?
Jeanie: You’re an OC based on a canon character... I would consider it it’s own category, but I think the general rule there is that the character should remind you of the canon character in at least 50% of their behaviors, personalities, and appearance. And some might even consider that setting the bar low.
Ricky: And do you think I stay in that box all the time?
Jeanie: No, you definitely surprise me quite a bit. But I think most good writers’ muses do that. It can be good to let you guys stretch your legs. Plus, if you become a pure OC there is nothing wrong with that and I wish it wasn’t so stigmatized.
Ricky: Sounds like you're toeing into a debate for another time now, though.
Jeanie: definitely. I think we’ve covered this,
