Is the character of Marci Stahl in the Netflix show based on anyone in the comics? I know Foggy has relationships in the comics, but I was wondering if any of them resembles Marci or if she was completely invented for the show.
I've always been under the impression that Marci Stahl was modeled at least somewhat on Debbie Harris, Foggy's longest-running partner in the comics. I never understood why they decided to invent a new character rather than just using Debbie, but that ended up fitting with a lot of the decisions that were made for the show regarding Foggy and the characters connected to him (e.g. giving him random new siblings instead of adapting Candace).
The core trait that both Debbie and Marci share, beyond their romance with Foggy, is a degree of moral grayness, at least in the beginning. Most of what I remember about Marci Stahl is that she was an insensitive, morally ambiguous corporate lawyer. This is not true of Debbie, but she had other things going on.
Debbie was introduced into Daredevil very early, in DD volume 1 #10, as Foggy's childhood sweetheart who he hadn't seen in years. However, she was also secretly in cahoots at the time with a supervillain called the Organizer, for which she ended up going to jail. The minute she got paroled, she reached out to Foggy to ask for a date.
Daredevil vol. 1 #36 by Stan Lee, Gene Colan, Frank Giacoia, and Artie Simek
Foggy was initially hesitant (not because of her past villainy, but because he was running for district attorney and was worried that dating an ex-con would be bad PR), but he was thoroughly smitten by this point, and the two quickly became a couple. Eventually, despite a lot of trauma and turmoil (this is the SparkNotes version; I should write a longer post about Debbie someday, because she was really put through the wringer), they got married.
Debbie was a neat character in her early appearances, but frustratingly, her personality got an overhaul after the marriage and she became something of a caricature (when she appeared at all)--a shallow social climber who was rude to and dismissive of Foggy and eventually cheated on him. They were married for fifty issues before Debbie filed for divorce, and she mostly hasn't been seen since. Foggy has dated a series of other women--some more on-panel than others--in the decades since then; two notable names on that list are Glori O'Breen (who had previously dated Matt and was, in fact, Debbie's niece) and the Spider-Man character Liz Allan-Osborn, to whom Foggy was actually married over in the Spider-Girl/MC2 universe.
