We are building a debt resistance movement. We believe that most individual debt is illegitimate and unjust. Most of us fall into debt because we are increasingly deprived of the means to acquire the basic necessities of life: health care, education, and housing. Because we are forced to go into debt simply in order to live, we think it is right and moral to resist it. Come get connected with SDBA’s many projects!

TIL: There's a company that takes donations to purchase student loans at pennies on the dollar just to wipe them out and has wiped $32m to date.
We have always said that Rolling Jubilee is not a solution to the debt crisis. We will continue using the funds collected by Rolling Jubilee to conduct debt purchases that highlight different aspects of the debt system. But as of December 31st, 2013, we have...

The Corinthian 15 Are On Strike!
To the Department of Education,

We have one thing to say
WE OWE YOU NOTHING
Corinthian College, a for-profit degree mill, went bankrupt, leaving its students high and dry, but with lots of student debt! And students can't go bankrupt to get out of their debt. So our allies at
The Debt Collective are supporting 15 students who refuse to pay. And so are we. The response has been amazing: positive press reports have appeared everywhere from The New Yorker to Newsweek. The country is ready to say no to unjust debt.
If you owe the bank a thousand dollars, the bank owns you.
If you owe the bank a trillion dollars, you own the bank.
Together, we own the bank.
Ideas Into Action: Strike Debt Bay Area meeting, 3/7/15, 4pm
Note: If you initially saw the 3/8/15 date, that was an error. Saturday, March 7, is the correct date. Thanks for your patience!
On the steps of the Oakland City Hall, 14th and Broadway, west side of Oscar Grant Plaza.
The fight to draw awareness to, and to resist, unjust debt has gotten a lot more exciting now that our allies at The Debt Collective have launched a student debt strike against bankrupt Everest College.
So this is a great time to join one of our many active projects:
continuing to halt the sale of the Berkeley Post Office, which we have now successfully delayed for well over a year
supporting the Everest/Corinthian debt strike, and encouraging more debt strikes around the country
expanding non-profit check-cashing from a single location in Oakland
connecting the dots between economic oppression and the murder of young black people by the police
organizing for public banking in Oakland, and for postal banking nationwide
ongoing study group
exploring worker-patient cooperative efforts to save Doctors Hospital in Pinole
and much more!

The Debt Collective
Strike Debt, a movement born out of Occupy Wall Street, has cancelled $15,000,000 in medical debt and nearly $4,000,000 in student debt. These debts can be bought up for pennies on the dollar (the real value of the debt). But this is just the beginning.
"It would cost less to make public universities and community colleges tuition-free than it does to finance the current debt-financed system of higher education."
