Review: A Debt to Be Paid
Nowhere to run!
Gillian Foster is desperate. She received a very strange letter in the mail not long ago. Since then, she’s been seeing shadowy figures everywhere. Coming for her. Frantic to find a safe place, she leaves home with her daughter Meg, only to find there is no way to outrun her pursuers.
Twenty years later, Gillian has been admitted to Hawthorne Psychiatric Facility. Meg receives a similar letter and is hunted by an unseen force. Is Meg also mentally ill, or are these creatures real? And if so, was her mother right all those years ago? Is there no place to hide?
This is the first book for author Patrick Lacey and he did not disappoint! A Debt to Be Paid is a fascinating tale that flirts with that line between what is supernatural and what is mental illness. It delves into the possibility that perhaps those who see what we believe are simply paranoid hallucinations may actually be perceiving supernatural forces that only a few can see. Lacey’s shadowy figures are wonderfully eerie and will leave you shivering at each little perceived movement in the night.
The characters are interesting and relatable for readers. Meg’s struggle, not only with the terror the shadowy figures bring but, in realizing that her mother was never crazy adds great depth to both her character and the story. The seemingly innocuous method that Lacey’s creatures use to draw in their victims is definitely a unique and clever idea. Overall, Patrick Lacey’s A Debt to Be Paid is a horrifically wonderful read and I can’t wait to see what his mind brings us next!
