It’s taken me a while to write about the 2010s an the end of our decade project. In many ways we’re too close to that decade (it’s barely more than six months ago) to really know what things will be remembered as trends. All the same, we delved into avocado toast, nut milks, cauliflower crust pizza, macaroons, and introducing the kids to some of the best sitcoms from last decade: @theoffice and @parksandrec. I liked the avocado toast but the cauliflower crust...gross. I’m sad to see the project end. It’s nice to eat whatever we want; our herb garden is out of control so it’s nice to be able to make use of it. The decade representing the 2000s was interesting. There was a return to making food from scratch with our chicken pot pie and bacon-egg muffins but there were also Uncrustables, yogurt packaged with mix ins, and frozen corn dogs. The Uncrustables...how hard is it to make PB&J? They didn’t taste bad but come on! They were expensive for something that wasn’t very good. People also looked to portion control and the cupcake/cake pop revolution was on! I mean, we are all the cupcakes so maybe we still need to work on portion control... Apparently, skateboarding had a surge of popularity in the 2000s so the kids bought a skateboard and tried it out. Aubrey was decent at it but Easton needs more work. For our movie we watched Moulin Rouge! w/my girlfriend @nicolekidman. I forgot how frenetic that movie was. I still love it even though it’s not for everyone. It’s kind of sad getting to the end. The 1990s. When I thought I was an adult. I graduated from college, got married, and moved from the Midwest to the East Coast. I started the decade with grunge and Pantera and ended it with Weezer and Barenaked Ladies. Most of the food we ate for our project came out of a box, ready to be reheated. Toaster Strudels, Gorton’s fish sticks, frozen pizza, Gushers, Lunchables, it was fast and colorful and not very tasty. We closed out the 90s making a focaccia from scratch so that we could have something palatable. When my intrepid researcher—the 14 yr old mastermind behind this project—struggled for an activity I searched my brain and brought back the Magic Eye books. The kids didn’t care for them and they just gave me a headache. Of course we had to watch Titanic for our movie, and while it was still cheesy, it was a lot better film than Top Gun. We’re getting close to the end of the project. Yesterday ended our quick journey through the 1970s. We started the trip with quiche, moved in to grilled cheese with tomato soup, had a fondue party while watching Rocky, cooked up some Hamburger Helper, and dined on Polynesian kebabs. I was alone in my love of all the music the decade had to offer—Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd to Wild Cherry and Chic as well as Carole King and Elton John. We’re moving into more food from boxes and faster meal prep but that comes at the cost of food quality. Fondue (growing up it was always oil but we do cheese these days) was a meal we always begged our mother for—and typically didn’t get—but she still makes this quiche to this day. I also forgot how much I like Rocky. It’s one of those films everyone thinks they know but haven’t really seen it. It’s the 1960s baby! We tried to replicate Keene Krunch cereal (complete with dehydrated ice cream), bologna sandwiches and Cheetos, model kits, beef burgundy, tunnel of fudge cake (whole and sliced), pop tarts, a cocktail party complete with snacks and cocktails, and finally The Sound of Music to close out the decade.
