On a quiet morning 79 years ago today, Imperial Japanese forces attacked the United States at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. More than 2,400 Americans were killed and 1,100 more wounded. Twenty-one ships of the Pacific Fleet were sunk or damaged, including the USS Arizona. Shocked and angered by the attack, the country joined the Allied forces to fight World War II, inspired by the call of “Remember Pearl Harbor.” A moving reminder of the service and sacrifice of those who fought, the USS Arizona Memorial is jointly administered by the U.S. Navy and the National Park Service. December 7 marks the anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor, which led to the entry of the United States into WWII. In remembrance, we are sharing this document from the Navy Department Bureau of Construction and Repair dating to February 9, 1916. This document listing United States Navy vessels under construction at that time allows us to recognize and pay tribute to the ships and sailors of the eight battleships at Pearl Harbor, also known together as Battleship Row. It was these ships that took the brunt of the Japanese attack on December 7th 1941. Five of the eight battleships that made up Battleship Row—Nevada, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Arizona, and California— were constructed by a variety of contactors with the details of their progress in 1916 documented here. The Shaw, a destroyer that was damaged during the attack on Pearl Harbor is also present on this document. The Nevada, the Pennsylvania, the California, and the Shaw were salvaged and repaired following the attacks on Pearl Harbor, all of which went on to serve in World War II. The Oklahoma capsized during the attacks but was refloated and salvaged, though it was not fit to ever return to duty and was decommissioned on Sept 1, 1944. The Arizona was sunk during the attacks and was irreparably damaged and remains at the bottom of Pearl Harbor to this day at the center of the memorial.
