december prompt #1: starry night
pairing: jungkook x reader, established relationship au
word count: 1,181
From your spot in the doorway, you saw your boyfriend push one side of his headphones away from his ear. “What did you say, babe?”
“One more game!” When you saw his look of confusion, you surged on, “Then get dressed. There’s somewhere we have to be!”
Jungkook glanced at his monitor before turning back to your excited expression. “It’s 2am,” is all he said in response. You ignored the underlying message in his tone. This was something you had been planning for a week ever since you saw that damn National Geographic article.
“Smart as a whip, Kook,” you teased, “Just let me know when you’re ready!” In a rush, you bounded back into the hallway without completely closing the door. Left alone, your boyfriend yelled at you to close it before getting thrown into another match.
It only took a little over 10 minutes for your boyfriend to emerge from his room, sweats and three layers of clothing swallowing his form.
“Wait, that was quick,” you observed, “Did the other team have leavers?”
You were familiar with Jungkook’s many interests because you always asked him about them. He even got you to play Overwatch and you managed to get decent at it. Of course, he would still eat you for breakfast if he wanted to, but Jungkook liked to duo with you in casual lobbies instead. Through all of this, you knew enough to have Overwatch conversations with him that made sense.
“Two,” he replied before grabbing a scarf to put on, “It was boring.”
“Lame. Well, you can queue again after we get back from our date.” Snatching a blanket off the pile you guys kept next to your couch, you joined Jungkook in the entryway. “Oh, wait, let me get one more thing.”
While you were rummaging for the other item you wanted to bring along, your boyfriend whined, “This couldn’t wait until tomorrow? It’s freezing outside.”
“It really can’t,” you quickly answered, “And we have a ways to go, so you can sleep in the car if you want.”
Jungkook’s eyes almost fell out of their sockets. “Where the heck are we going?”
“You’ll see!” You grabbed the outdoor pillow you wanted and rejoined him at the door. Flicking his nose with your free hand, you laughed, “Always so impatient.”
The pout you received was devastating, but you had to push forward. However, as soon as you opened your front door, you most definitely thought about chickening out. It was bitingly cold outside.
“Shit, babe,” Jungkook winced, and you threw him an apologetic glance. “Are you sure you’re good driving?”
You nodded, too cold to even reply as your ears burned instantly. When you locked the door, you fished for your gloves as you both walked to your car. In that moment, you envied everyone with automatic-start.
When you were both situated inside, you tossed the blanket and pillow onto Jungkook’s lap. “Close your eyes for me, okay? You can’t know where we’re going.”
“Seriously?” He frowned in earnest now. “This feels more like a hazing than a date.” Despite his words, your boyfriend obeyed, throwing his head back on the headrest and closing his eyes. The blanket went up to his chin, and his arms hugged the long pillow on his thighs.
A cackle escaped you. “Just trust me, babe,” you chided, “I’m sure you’ll like this place.”
“I bet not. But since you’re driving...”
After you pulled out of your parking spot, you smirked. “Bet,” you goaded, “If I win, you spend the whole night with me.”
Without opening his eyes, Jungkook furrowed his brows. “It’s the end of the comp season! I’m already pushing it not playing right now.”
“Love the confidence, Kookie,” you chuckled. “If I lose, I’ll never tear you away from your precious gaming chair again.”
“Deal.” You heard more than saw the playfulness in his voice.
Full of mirth, you put music on as soon as your body defrosted. The car was finally warming up, and the holiday tunes had you bopping your head. Knowing the directions to your destination by heart, you took necessary and unnecessary turns. Whether these threw your very smart boyfriend off or not, you couldn’t say for sure. Regardless, you made sure to make the trip much longer than it needed to be.
When your destination came into view, you pulled into a parking spot and announced, “We’re here!”
As soon as Jungkook opened his eyes to survey the area, confusion mixed with relief coated his face. He was so confused that he started laughing. “Seriously?”
The only thing you could do was laugh at his reaction.
You were right back at your place, after all.
“Technically, this isn’t exactly where I wanted us to go,” you explained, smiling even harder at your boyfriend’s expression. You knew how he hated going out, and you knew that not giving him much to go on was going to frustrate him. But you thought of this idea and wanted to try it, since you both at least liked trying new things. It was so endearing to see him relieved that you were staying in. “We’re gonna hang out on the roof tonight.”
A blip of reluctance flashed in his dark eyes. “It’s even colder up there,” he whined.
“It’ll be worth it! But we have to hurry, or else we’ll miss it.” You scrambled out of the car without another word, and you groaned when Jungkook blatantly took his time to get out of the passenger seat. “Hurry!”
The pair of you rushed to get to the roof of your building, and you chose a spot to lay the blanket out. To your relief, the wind wasn’t too harsh that night. It was still very, very cold, though. The pillow you brought along was long enough for both of your heads, like you planned. Above you, the sky was dark and blue and dotted with tiny specks of light. The buildings around yours weren’t taller, so you were able to see the universe at its fullest as it claimed your entire vision.
“Wow,” Jungkook breathed next to you, his words leaving him in wisps of white, “This is cool.”
“It’ll get better,” you giggle in excitement, recalling the article you read. “Should be in just a moment.”
On cue, a wintry meteor shower appeared in the skies. Streaks of white and yellow soared through the dark expanse, and you smiled at the sight. You almost forgot to watch your boyfriend’s reaction, and when you turned your head, your heart fluttered.
All the stars in the universe were reflected in his eyes, the meteors swimming in his pupils. Your breath hitched in your throat, and you weren’t sure if it was the cold that coaxed tears from your eyes or your love for the boy watching the night sky.
When Jungkook turned to face you, he smiled and wiped your cheeks. “I win,” you said in a cracked voice, and he could only laugh and tug you in for a crushing hug.
