Here the flowers of the deciduous climber Wisteria sinensis at Pashley Manor, East Sussex, U.K. have fortunately escaped a recent late spring frost and cascade down the house. They have even been joined by Clematis flowers.

Clematis florida 'Taiga' (old man's beard) has been described as a "flamboyant climber" which produces flowers throughout the summer against dark green foliage. It belongs to Clematis Pruning Group 3 where plants can be cut back to a pair of strong buds about 20cm (8”) above ground level in the spring, removing all of the previous year's growth. This specimen was on display at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, London.

Rosa banksiae 'Lutea' (yellow Banksian rose) is a large and vigorous, early flowering, thornless semi-evergreen rambler with clusters of pale yellow, rosette-like double flowers. This climber needs room to spread and is ideally trained on a sheltered wall in full sun with moderately fertile, moist but well-drained soil. If you'd prefer clusters of double, white, scented flowers there is another form Rosa banksiae alba plena.

A standard Wisteria floribunda 'Kimono' (Japanese wisteria) is flowering at the Witch Hazel Nursery, Kent, U.K. This cultivar is one of my favourites with greyish petals with a purple calyx contrasting with the pale flowers.

On the side of this barn the large rambling Rosa laevigata 'Cooperi' (Cooper's Burma rose) has been beautifully trained and pruned to produce a dismay of large, single, slightly fragrant, white flowers. This rose has glossy, green leaves and grows best in fertile, moist but well-drained soil against a sunny wall in a sheltered position.

Wisteria Open Day at the Witch Hazel Nursery, Kent, U.K., offered a great opportunity to compare species and cultivars. Here are a number of Wisteria brachybotrys (silky wisteria) cultivars grown for their different colour flowers. This is a deciduous anticlockwise twining climber. The leaves are up to 35cm long with about 11 downy leaflets while the flowers hang in sprays 10-15cm long and are highly scented. They can be followed by bean-like velvety seedpods.

Fallopia baldschuanica (Russian vine, mile-a-minute vine) is an extremely vigorous deciduous climber and rapidly becomes invasive. Here this relative of Fallopia japonica (Japanese Knotweed) is climbing into a tree and producing a cascade of white flowers which contrast with the autumn foliage. Avoid planting this species and admire other people's rampant plants!

Wisteria floribunda 'Multijuga' (Japanese wisteria) often called Wisteria floribunda 'Macrobotrys' is here doing what it does best and draping flowers down from this pergola and filling the air with scent. Wisteria need pruning every year and tying into the support structure to promote flowering spurs. Note a shorter flowered cultivar is in the foreground.
