ALEXANDER HILBERT RANT
I have so many feelings about alexander hilbert. I feel so bad for him, a potentially unpopular opinion I am aware. I feel bad for him, and I don't think he should've died the way he did. Hilbert did many awful things, but I don't think he is an awful person. All he wanted was for his work to have a positive impact. All he wanted was for Decima to help people, because he couldn't help those he loved. Hilbert's death is heartbreaking because he had enough faith in the plan to not upload his brain to command. His only motivation was his work, he only cared for his work, not for himself, but his faith in the plan and his crewmates backfired on him in the worst way possible. The hephaestus fell into wolf 359, destroying all the backups. With Doug's memories getting destroyed, all the people who knew that the virus could work are dead. Furthermore, not only did Hilbert want the virus to be used to help people, he never intended the human test phase to hurt the subjects. During the first trial run, he infected Engineer Mace Fisher. The man most likely to not be affected negatively, the man who had been given conditioning to be able to withstand the virus. He only infected Dr kuan hui and Communications Samuel Lambert because he was told he had to after Fisher's death in a freak accident. Additionally something that makes me sad is Doug Eiffel knew Hilberts real name but chose to not call him that at his funeral. Additionally, with Doug not having his memories anymore, all he learnt about Hilbert, from his real name, to the events he learnt about his childhood, is gone. I know that he is an awful person, but I do feel bad for him frequently
