Once I saw a short series of unrelated episodes which got my attention. I think I saw it more than 10 years ago.
There was this episode where a man would always flip a coin whenever he had to make a decision. He used probability to guide his own life.
And that's how he met his girlfriend, that's how he got his job, that's how he got to eat at that restaurant, that's how his life arrived at the point it was.
One day he thought, what if that coin flip had been different? Everything went backwards, the restaurant where he ate, the job he got, the girl he met. It was like none of this had happened.
Suddenly he was again at the point where he had to choose to go right of left. On the first round he had gone left, according to the coin he had flipped, but now the coin result was different. Note that he had no knowledge of what had happened in the previous future. His mind had his past knowledge and none of the possible future outcome.
Now he headed right, and perhaps, everything changed. I say perhaps because I think the story ended here. I believe that the left side was the one who led him to meet the girl who became his girlfriend, but now he had turned right, probably not meeting her. This was one of those episodes where little is explained and it is left up to the viewer's interpretation. And I think that',s why it marked me so much.
I tried to find this series again but with no success (is it because it belongs to another timeline? Who knows. Joking, this kind of things are pretty common with this kind of underground series and perhaps I am not using the correct key words).
As Zero Escape games do it, this episode showed how simply changes in life make big changes in the future. I know people say we can't get stuck in the past. But the thought of different possibilities always strikes my mind and I always wonder how different would my life be, had I made that different decision.
