I’m working on a mtg deck for a favored soul play style. Its red/white, some of my favorite colors, and uses auras to bless my creatures. still working out what auras i want as Red doens’t have many that fit the theme but White has them in abundance lol

I Have Made A Monster

My friend had bought a Nicol Bolas planeswalker card a few months ago. Initially, he made his own deck around him. Mind you, he has made some pretty good decks in the past, but this was not cutting it. After some mana tweaking and re-organization, we made his improved deck. It’s one part discard, one part land destruction, one part negation, and one part control.

Now you are thinking, “wow, it must be inconsistent like nothing else”...you’d be wrong. Early game it’s discard and negation. Mid to late game it’s land destruction and control. Barely any creatures, but it really doesn’t need them. It has Nicol Bolas, Tamiyo the Moon Sage, and Ral Zarek as planeswalkers for it. I barely win against it every time.

The worst part is...it’s still improving.

Bant Artifacts

I’m reduxing the deck and i’m wondering, should I use more artifact land searches/rocks or instant/sorcery searches? The problem with my Bant artifacts is you need a lot of mana and artifacts can kinda do it ok alone. And suggestions would be nice.

Also, Super Artifact Maker is getting more frustrating to make. Metallurgic Summoning is not too expensive, but it seems to be snatched out from under me in the middle of the night each time.

Do you have any advice for someone hoping to make their own tarot or oracle deck?

My first piece of advice is to be interested it. If you’re interest is going to be fleeting, I would not bother starting because you’ll just disappoint yourself. I am not saying to not try, but if you flit from one project to another, you can do some easier projects first. I’ve had a number of people coming to me saying they can’t finish because they just don’t want to.

My next piece of advice is to pick a theme! I like to doodle out ideas, even though I haven’t drawn any decks (yet). Doodling gets the brain going. IT’s good for you and I 100% recommend doodling when brain storming.

Next figure out how you’re going to do your deck. You could do fractals like I did for the Auroracle or you could do collage. You could do digital images. You could take photos. You could use stock images. You could paint. You could do anything, but you should make it constant. You don’t want a deck with 75 drawn images and suddenly 3 painted ones.

One you have your idea of the how you should think of what you want each card to include. Do you want partial black and white? Do you want only neon colours? Line drawings?

(Oracle step in here: try and decide how many cards you want. It’s not an answer you need 100% but it helps to figure out how much work you need to do!)

Next step is the best step! If possible do a rough draft (doesn’t work if you’re doing college/fractal images). Make notes for all the cards. This way you don’t forget something you loved at the beginning. These aren’t the be all end all for your deck, but it gives you an idea what you were thinking at the beginning!

As for making the cards themselves, you need to pace yourself. I know this can be hard, but I know from experience that making 12 cards in one day can make you take a look at a deck and just give up for a long time. Work on them when you can and step back if you think they’re done and come back to them later. They might be done, you might see what you need to finish.
