when asked what my favourite book series is I always say the little house on the prairie series but I don’t know if that’s 100% true anymore or if I just say it out of habit/because it was such an important part of my childhood

(Okay this is actually related to a scene in my If I Can Leave Off Burying The White sequal that’s going to be published next month, but I've altered it so it can stand alone.)

“So I was given an interesting assignment today,” Vega said as Wylie joined her on the bench for lunch.

“Yeah?”

“Cho wants me to talk to the new agent.  About her injury.”

“Because it’s in a similar place as yours?”

“Yeah.  Because she’s going to scar pretty bad and I guess that distressed her.”  She unwrapped her sandwich.  “I don’t know what to say.  She wasn’t as bad off as me, so her scars won’t be as ugly as mine, but the thing is...” she shrugged.  “I don’t care.  You know?”

Wylie knew.  Vega’s abdomen was visually unappealing by most anyone’s standards.  Her scars were discolored and slightly raised, and some of them appeared jagged.  She looked like a battlefield. But she never minded that.  Her scars were never visible on the job and they didn’t affect her professional look, and she was fully functional as long as she took her meds that served the duty of her lost pancreas.  Agent Kemper, however, had struggled to maintain a positive body image in the past and it didn’t surprise anyone on the team that she was having a hard time dealing with the idea of being scarred.

“Wylie, help me,” she said.  “I’m not cut out for this conversation.”

“I don’t know,” he said.  “Just tell her how tough she is.  How those scars are a symbol of her strength and that doesn’t make her ugly.  And remind her that, you know, no one can see her scars on the job.  She gets to decide who knows about them, and if they think that makes her ugly, they’re wrong and don’t deserve to have seen them.”

Vega was staring at him.  “Wow.”  A small smile came over her face.  “How long have you been holding onto that speech?”

“Since I found out you made it.  Never needed it then, but...I think it applies.”

She reached over and grabbed an olive from Wylie’s lunch container, popping it into her mouth.  “I think that might work.  Thanks.”
