Deeper Underground, een korte film van Guus ter Beek en Tayfun Sarier van In Return waar je door de wondere en symmetrische wereld van de Londense tube wordt geleid.
The infinite tunnels pull us in with their symmetry. The ceiling lights guide our eyes to the horizon. The tiles and posters form patterns that please the eye. The echoes of rushing crowds, a flickering light, a train zooming by.

Chapter 6: When the Going Gets Tough
“Again!” Four barked.
I turned as I made it to the edge of the trailer and took off in a dead sprint. Nearing the opposite edge, I could feel and hear the blood rushing in my ears as I struggled to focus. Seeing the duct taped X, I launched myself up and off by my right foot as I sailed through the air and across to the trailer Four was standing on. I landed, ran to the opposite end, and slowed when I neared the edge.
“You’re getting better at that,” he said. I placed my hands on my head as I nodded and walked around the trailer, trying to slow and even out my breaths.
The last few weeks had been brutal. Aside from the fact that my algorithms were having difficulties hacking into three remaining files, I had been getting up early in the mornings for training. It was clear to Five I wasn’t going to be a surgeon, but when it came to everyone else on the team, she definitely knew I would be a great assistant while she worked on someone. I had the basics of first aid down and knew I could stitch someone up in a pinch, but I definitely did not possess the know-how. I wasn’t a pro with shooting, but Two convinced me with a bit more work, I would be up to par with her. Which bolstered my confidence when I followed Seven’s sniper training. He was quite impressed with how quickly I could make a decision, as well as figure out a scenario he would set up. I haven’t been put under stress yet but that was a lesson for another day. Physical combat with Three was exhausting. He built on my knowledge of self defense and expanded upon that. He did admire the gumption I had and often would have me train with him in the weight room to help increase stamina and build up strength. Which I had to admit came in handy when it came to learning how to parkour with Four. I swore though, Four took particular pride in running me into the dirt...literally. We started slowly, learning how to balance by jumping from stepping stone to stepping stone. He explained if I could keep my balance when jumping from spot to spot, the momentum to keep going would come naturally. He wasn’t wrong, but it took me some time. Then he had me running his obstacle course. That was a challenge the first day he had me try it out. My balance had improved but I was all over the place attempting to run and jump and land without falling off the landing steps and running across a balance beam to jump up to and across the makeshift buildings. The worst part was we barely took breaks with the obstacle course. If I stumbled and fell, Four was barking at me to start again. It wasn't like I could memorize the course either. Four changed it frequently. I understood why but the frustration with his technique and that smart ass grin of his when I “failed” was starting to piss me off and made me appreciate the days I was learning something else. I was determined to be good at parkour, but it also made me put forth extra effort into shooting and hand to hand combat.
On this particular morning, Four was having fun making me jump from trailer top to plane or vice versa out in a training field he set up in the airplane graveyard (otherwise known as our team base). I had a rough start, nearly missing my mark a few times and having to scramble quickly to pull myself up before I fell on my ass on the ground. He’d chuckle and inform me that he enjoyed watching me struggle my way up to the top. I’d flipped him off every time he’d laugh and that somehow only made him laugh harder as he reassured me that everyone had difficulties with his training course. I finally caught up and was finally able to calculate my momentum and what I needed in order to make the jumps.
“Wanna try something more difficult, princess?” Four asked and I rolled my eyes.
“Sure, why not. Anything to make this session end faster,” I grumbled as he grinned mischievously. He patted my back and I shrugged him off.
“Awww… it’s not that bad, Ze,” he quipped.
“Define not that bad,” I retorted as I followed him back down to the ground. He picked up a small cooler that sat beside the trailer and we walked across the field over to a set of planes and a few trailers. The sun had just come up about an hour ago and it was starting to get hot. Or I put a lot more effort into the exercises this morning than I realized. I heard him unzip the cooler and then saw a water bottle being shaken in my face.
“Drink up. Don’t want you to die on me,” he said. On any normal day at the gym, one could forgo drinking water for a little bit, but given this whole place was in the middle of a desert, we had to be careful of dehydration at a more rapid rate. It was the reason for getting up so early most mornings and finishing up just a few hours after the sun rose. We avoided most of the heat and saved One from having a heart attack that he actually would kill one of us. I drained about half the bottle, trying not to over do it and make myself sick. We made it to the set of planes and climbed up. I wandered the wingspan, looking at the field before me in this new area. The planes and trailers were set wider apart, each increasing in distance (further than the other training area I had started on this morning). I drew in a deep breath, wondering what I had just gotten myself into.
“Scared, love?” he asked with a grin.
“Fuck you,” I snapped. “Let’s just get this over with.”
“Easy, Ze. This requires a bit more involvement and thought than the bunny slopes over there,” he said. I nodded as I noted the duct taped X on the current roof we were on and gulped at how far the wing and the trailer were from each other. I wasn’t sure I could do it and it made my stomach sink at the thought that I might end up dead on the ground below.
“You get the idea. Run and take a leap,” he said as he walked up behind me. I turned to him, squinting in the morning light at his beaming face. Something in the look must have indicated nerves and he gestured for me to look down. I drew in a ragged breath as I peered over the side, noting the netting they often would use in aerial stunt shows...or at least that’s what I thought.
“I made sure it was safe. But I think you are ready to try this,” he said as he clapped me on the back. I shrugged him off and walked toward the end in which we had climbed up. There was nothing left to do but try to fly. At this point I was getting better, but this was a bit farther than I had attempted. I tried to harness my nerves into a source of empowerment, taking in deep breaths to rid myself of the negative thoughts and doubts bubbling within me.
“You don’t have to if you don’t want to-” he said, breaking me out of my thoughts. I shook my head.
“Stop trying to get in my head,” I snapped. He raised his hands and gestured for me to follow through. I drew in another breath and took off running. Blood was rushing in my ears, making it hard to hear anything. My heart felt like it was going to beat out of my chest as I neared the X. I felt like I just might puke...but I didn’t stop my momentum and instead took the leap. For a moment, I sailed through the air, feeling the adrenaline pump furiously in my veins. The one thing I could definitely say about parkour was the rush of excitement I felt whenever I took a leap was addicting. Maybe I’d grow to love it… or…
I suddenly felt it in my gut: the impending dread as I realized while soaring across the sky that I was falling lower than my projected landing space. I wasn’t going to make it to the other side. Oh fuck! Fuck! I closed my eyes tight, knowing that there wasn’t a damn thing I could do as I helplessly continued across. Then I felt something hard slam into me from behind as I was pushed toward the trailer top.
“Tuck and roll!” his voice hollered into my ear, his hands gripping around me. We crash landed, clipping the edge of the trailer as we came down rolling on the solid surface. I had managed to half ass tuck before colliding with the rooftop, scraping myself up in the process. Every part of my body was on fire as I finally stopped moving, on my back facing the sky. Panting heavily, I lay there for what seemed like an eternity, assessing my body and whether or not I could move. Head turned to the side, I noted that Four was right next to me, already rolling up to his hands and knees but panting as heavily as I was. I felt anger boil through my veins as I forced my body to move, rolling over and onto my hands and knees. Air burned in my lungs as I struggled to sit back on my knees. Nothing was broken it seemed, thank goodness for that. But I was pissed.
“You cheeky fucker!” I exclaimed. “You knew I wouldn’t make that jump! Why didn’t you just say something?”
He smiled, his hands on his knees as he tried to catch his breath. I got to my feet, steadying myself with my hands on my hips.
“You needed to know I have your back. You’re welcome,” he said between breaths. I rubbed my arms where I’d hit the ground.
“I’m not thanking you, asshole!” I cried. He continued to grin as he shook his head.
“If not for me, your highness, you’d theoretically be lying in a broken heap on the ground,” he said. I rolled my eyes.
“This will not work if you keep insulting me!” I snapped.
“One said you’d be a handful. Now I understand why,” he quipped.
“Yeah. I think I’m done here. I’m not feeling these exercises, especially if you plan on doing that again,” I said as I turned and made my way to the edge of the trailer to scale down.
“Do you always do that?” he asked. I stopped mid stride and turned around to face him. I knew I should have just kept walking away but curiosity got the best of me.
“Do what, Four?” I asked. What could I say? I’m a glutton for punishment. He crossed his arms and nodded toward me.
“Leave when things get the slightest bit uncomfortable or difficult?” he asked.
“No, I don’t,” I answered honestly. He nodded, scuffing his shoes along the trailer top.
“Then why are you now?” he asked. I threw my hands up and growled in frustration. I walked back toward him as I drew in a deep breath and rolled my shoulders which were stiff from the impact. There wasn’t any part of me that wasn’t sore and all I really wanted was a shower and a long drive, but I was determined not to give Four any reason to think I couldn’t do this. I moved into position to stretch my legs, flexing my foot as I stretched back.
“Look...I’m sorry if I offended you. One is adamant that you at least learn a little bit of what we all do. While every task has its difficulties, no one wants to be a sky walker. I have to be tough,” he said as he took a spot next to me and started lunging as well.
“Is it because I am a woman that you assume my feelings get easily hurt? I assure you they’re not. I really do feel like I have had more than what my body can handle today, but I am not a quitter,” I said. “I don’t appreciate being undermined.”
I switched legs and made sure to push deep into the stretch without overdoing it. I glanced at Four, who looked lost in thought as he also switched legs and dove deep into his lunge. After a moment of comfortable silence, he drew in a deep breath and brought himself back upright.
“We won’t do any more jumping today. How about we work on some balance and call it good? I’ll even offer a massage to help work out the kinks?” he said as he wagged one eyebrow. I wasn’t sure what came over me at that moment. I went from being extremely pissed at him for treating me like I was some helpless female to suddenly perking up at the prospect of his hands massaging me. My entire body felt like it burst into flames and I felt my core clench around nothing, a sudden wetness seeping into my underwear. Fuck…I lifted an eyebrow then swatted his arm. He burst into a fit of laughter as he clutched his arm.
“Like I am going to trust you putting hands on me after what you put me through today?” I replied.
“Got something against massages?” he chuckled. I pushed him back as he continued to laugh, holding up his hands.
“Ok. Ok. I’ll stop,” he said, the smile wide on his face. I felt everything lower in me tense again, my clit throbbed for attention as I took in his playful state. He was wildly attractive when he smiled, the way his green eyes sparkled made my heart do backflips. I’m in danger, I thought. I shook my head and collected myself as best as I could. I would have to settle for taking care of things later, when he wasn’t around. I rolled my eyes with a smirk and made way for the side of the trailer to scale down.
“Come on. If you’re lucky I’ll get through it on the first round,” I teased as I shimmied my way down the rope ladder.
