Summary:

There are often droughts in Wuji Country, and the monks are not doing well. The Taoists have a way to pray for rain, so the king and his subjects all believe that Taoism bullies monks. The old Taoist in Zhongnan Mountain is a green-haired lion under the seat of Manjusri Bodhisattva. He was named the national teacher by the king, but he murdered the king and replaced him. Tang Sanzang and his disciples came to Wuji Country and found that Taoism bullied monks, and wanted to change it. Staying overnight at Baolin Temple, the king's wronged soul asked Tang Sanzang for help, so Tang Sanzang asked Sun Wukong to avenge the king and subdue the demon. After retrieving the king's remains, Sun Wukong asked Taishang Laojun for the elixir to save the king. The demon Taoist's deeds were exposed, and he fought with Sun Wukong, and Manjusri Bodhisattva came to subdue him. Oriental Legend 2 follows up the original game with another romp through Journey to the West. The original game's five characters are joined by three newcomers: Er-Lang, Drakan, and Princess Iron Fan. Two more characters can be unlocked after completing the game once.

Like the original game, this is a scrolling beat-em-up for up to four players. This time around, character growth is a major gameplay feature. Players earn experience for defeating enemies and level up, with underleveled characters much more likely to have trouble beating late-game bosses. There are three game modes. "Plot" features seven stages with a regular difficulty level designed for regular players. "Online Ranking" is a more challenging eight-stage mode which, when completed, provides the player with a code to input at the official website in order to share their codes on the online leaderboard. "Challenge Boss" is a boss rush that goes through all of the bosses in the game, with players challenged to get through in as little time as possible.

This is the first game for the PGM2 to feature support for the hardware's card reader accessory. By buying an IC card at their local arcade, players gain the ability to save and load their character's progress, allowing them to keep their level growth and items between runs.

Journey to the West (more distinguishably referred to as: Monkey, Monk, and the Monsters Go West) is Chinese animated adaptation of the famous novel of the same name, which ran from June 2010 to 2015 with a total of 52 episodes by Jiangsu Ciwen Ziguang Digital TV Co., Ltd. This particular adaptation is rather parodic in nature, and borrows many design and animation influences from Japanese anime in an attempt to better appeal to children.
