Hi, if you don’t mind me asking, what are your favorite adaptions or iterations of Sun Wukong or JTTW in general? I’d like to hear your thoughts!

My favorite adaptations of JTTW have got to be the ones I grew up with! :3 Namely 1999 JTTW and 1961 Havoc in Heaven!

All things considered, I think 1999 still holds up as a solid adaptation despite its childish tone! Their characterization's pretty good and they hit most of the iconic JTTW storylines! It was the first bit of JTTW stuff I ever watched and it will always hold a special place in my heart for that :,) The way it altered bits of canon was also very good. I periodically forget that Sun Wukong kneeling before Fangcun Cave for days before Patriarch Puti accepted him as a tudi wasn't a thing that actually happened in Wu Cheng'en canon. Groundbreaking, amazing, 10/10, highly recommend.

1961 Havoc in Heaven is my mom's favorite adaptation!! When I was like five I refused to watch it though gfdhsjjdkdsjd The opera facepaint scared me so I always asked to watch 1999 JTTW instead. But now that I'm older I appreciate 1961 a lot more!! I love all the classical opera influence the movie has, from its character designs to its soundtrack to its staging and choreography <3 It's all so gorgeous and you can really see the admiration the producers held for Chinese opera. It's such an iconic adaptation and its legacy is undeniable. I have a 1961 bookmark and three 1961 shirts. I would've had more but nowhere near where I was visiting had them in stock 😭

On the topic of 1961 merch, everyday I regret not getting this incredibly tacky Havoc in Heaven Erlang Shen vs Sun Wukong shirt. Look at it's impact font meme text. That's not even 1961 Sun Wukong, I think it's 1985 Sun Wukong. This is official Shanghai Animations merch 😭

Also, I didn't grow up with it, but 1996 JTTW definitely deserves an honorable mention. First off, Cantonese Sun Wukong rights <3 Secondly, I love how they characterized the cast- Particularly with the added depth to Zhu Bajie's character and the friendship backstory with Iron Fan Princess, Bull Demon King, and Sun Wukong ;-; Also Sun Wukong having an EXPLICITLY NOTED lack of interest in women, and Bodhisattva Guanyin's transition and gender identity being explicitly acknowledged?????? God ;-;

Though if we were to talk pure aesthetics alone, I don't think any of these serve as particularly good adaptations or characterizations of Sun Wukong, but FeiRenZai, NaoNaoTianGong, and Return of the Yao King's character designs live rent-free in my brain.

He does, a little! Not enough to study or pursue the supernatural, but just enough to be careful. After the Bite, even though he has no memory or knowledge of what really happened, he does have a sense that his circumstances are... peculiar.
