Just a personal rambling about Adela's skin

Just as a heads up, I'm not spoiler free when it comes to Adela so I hope you can bear with me today since her new skin has me totally in love even if the showcase isn't out yet, the Adela brainrot is real and it's always there, but I've been taking my time to let it out. Going to the point, GOD, I LOVE HER SO MUCH.

I like the way it's something elegant yet quite simple, since it fits her style really well. I often think about how Adela is so complex yet she keeps trying to be pretty simple for the sake of her own view of "a perfect and relaxing life", but it's the details what makes the difference, she's still pretty elegant and has a lot of style.

Regarding what we know by the tranlations, the name is "tower candlelight". The first thing I thought about was the "Tower" mentioned in Phantom of the Mist, the clock tower where everything changes, where Letta warns us to no get close to, but it ends being what connects every piece of information together with Adela guiding us to learn the story about Mad Shears.

I'm not really surprised by the idea of a concept similar to Rapunzel, but I absolutely adore it. It's the way she's trapped by her own hair, in a tower the same description calls "My heart shall become a tall tower, and I shall sit at its precipice. There, there is nothing but silence and sorrow." (Just in case, I'm using the tranlation provided by Jiu Jiu subs).

It explains itself pretty well, right? She's been trapped for a long time by her own worries, her way to escape? "let's cut the worries away", but she's still there, her heart still is there. Same as the story in her interrogation, no matter how much Adela wants to avoid it, she knows there's something she's missing. It's just a "Let's think I'm out" but she's not, she's just there, imagining she's out.

I like how there's many candles around here, even birdcages and their surrounded by flowers (I'll do another post later if I find them or have an idea about it, flower language it's really interesting). I would love to say that she's another flower between those cages, there's even vines around.

The hairstyle is something so personal that the second I saw it I felt like crying while saying to my friends "I love how she has long hair, but I don't know how to feel about it in her case". For Adela, long hair represents worries that suffocate the owner of said hair, so being able to see her with pretty long hair, despite being something that I love and adore in a personal way, it really got me thinking "Is she okay????" (baby, do you want a hug and some tea?)

All the context so far left me really intrigued, but it also means that this is a part of herself, an important one. Probably this is how Adela felt for many years since she was young, she always was bound to something, until she decided to cut it away herself in search of her own happiness (Her relationship with her mother, the connection with Chief, the multiple times she tried to find a place she could call "home", but never found one), and in the end, it was all a part of her that she neglected, her own memories, in search for some stability. Here she looks so far quite calm, I guess it would be related/explain later to have some connection with Chief?

It reminds her of her 100% compliance line "People tend to bury themselves with old troubling memories, overburdened and suffocated, so I cut it away from me. But little did I know that I also cut away something that allowed my heart to sing. It's you who helped me rediscover that something".

She's no longer waiting for a home, nor searching for one, she's no longer suffocating herself constantly with feelings she can't comprehend (see the Mother's pendant interaction, It keeps hurting me), she's just here, looking at you with a smile, knowing things can change, but change doesn't really mean something bad. Her hearth is free now, she is free now

What is Haskell used for? I can point to many languages and say, "oh, this is often used for thus and such" but I don't know what Haskell's common use cases are.

The main use of Haskell is in improving Haskell :P

Seriously, parser combinators are a great idea and easily expressed in Haskell, and so it's easy enough to write some basic parsers for a non-syntax heavy language, and a lot of the features are developed with this in mind (and has trickle down effects on serialization/deserialization libraries--Aeson is pretty good for dealing with JSON (de)serialization)

I really like it for writing backends with Servant (kind of like Flask in that it's not a batteries-included type of server library), although the errors are kind of confusing, especially if you're not used to Haskell already

There's a relatively Haskell-specific development of a thing called "monad transformers", which is an ugly term for a way to write capability-specific abstractions

For instance, if you have MonadDatabase or a DatabaseT in your type signature, then that function can call whatever functions are defined for MonadDatabase, be it get/set for some restricted types, or computing raw SQL...either way, it's obvious that if you're trying to use this to get the system time, you're using the wrong abstraction (and you can have multiple of these in your type signature, so you might have (Monad m) => AWSBucketT (TimeT (m Int)), which assuming some definitions, might say "In some monad m, I'll return an Int, and have capabilities to access our company's AWSBuckets and read the system time"

(Monad transformers as they're used often aren't great imo, but i've already gone too deep, perhaps too deep by even saying "monad")

Beyond that, a couple other useful things: you might know map from Python or Rust, but what if it was easier to automatically get a sensible definition of map? After all, there's usually only one "right answer"--apply the function to all relevant targets!

So say you have some type like data Tree e a = Leaf e | Node a [Tree e a]

(so, a Tree over e and a is either a `Leaf` that only has an `e`, or a Node, which is annotated with an `a`, and has a list of child trees over the same types)

then if you just add `derive Functor` to the end of the datatype, it'll create a map function that looks like:

map f (Leaf e) = Leaf e

map f (Node a trees) = Node (f a) [map f tree | tree <- trees]

(or in pythonish: def map(f, t): if t.isLeaf(): pass; else: t.value = f(t.value); t.children = [map(f, tree) for tree in t.children])

Say you want your map to effect the Leafs rather than the annotations of the Nodes, then all you need to do is flip the type variables, then you can just write it as data Tree a e = Leaf e | Node a [Tree a e] deriving Functor

There's similar derivings for Show (the default printing type) or JSON de/serialization among others. If you're familiar with Rust's derive macro, it's a similar thing

This isn't something one should choose a language *for* but i think it's pretty neat

Property testing is easy in Haskell, you assert some property that you think your funciton should have (say, f(f(x)) = f(x)), write a way to compare the output for equality (or derive it), write a way to generate your inputs (or derive it, you can also easily customise it thanks to the combinators), and then your computer will generate however many "unit tests" that you want, and then check them all at once against the property. (There's an extension to this where if you put an ordering of "complexity", the property testing library will often try to find the "simplest" (according to your definition) input that violates the property.)

The pattern matching/equational definition of functions is something that I like a lot, there's a case analyzer built into the compiler that tells you when you've neglected a case (or added a case to a datatype), and there's extensions for IDEs that will show this as a linting message

Some other things that Haskell's used for is HPC (supposedly the FFI isn't awful, and implementing a really basic version of Map/Reduce in Haskell is pretty trivial, thanks to the thought put into async + threaded programming (it has problems and footguns, just mostly different ones than you're used to except for "the fuck is the runtime doing"; that just happens, and the GHC RTS i hear is like an abyss of phd theses)

There's also a healthy niche of circuit design(?), thanks to the deep support for embedded dsls; I'd recommend going through https://hackage.haskell.org/package/clash-ghc or Conal Elliot's work

Finally, Haskell is a language that tries to be on the forefront of language design. This means that a lot of useless and confusing features have snuck into the language, although usually they're gatekept behind compiler extensions. However, a lot of neat things show up early on in the Haskell world, before a lot of other programming languages pick up the features! I've already mentioned the deriving feature similar to Rust, it also has a linear types extension (tho support is limited as its a recent addition), and was a breeding ground for reactive programming iirc (React makes a lot more sense than Haskell's similar libraries tho)

Let’s talk about BBC’s Class

So... the new Doctor Who spinoff. People have heard of it, and some have even seen it (I’ve seen episodes 1-5/8).

I’ve held off on trying to see it for a while, because of — well, I’ll call them “bad experiences” — with another DW spinoff — here’s looking at you, Torchwood!

But Class is actually really good!

As I’ve not seen the entirety of the show, I guess my impression isn’t complete, but I really like it. It’s sweet, and yes, at times it does seem a bit repetitive or fast or a bit like if Torchwood was set in highschool... but most of it is really nice. 

The characters are really diverse, and they have unique, complex relationships with the people around them. There’s two different compelling relationships, but there’s also friendships; the show doesn’t seem to be out of touch with “reality” — like school, and family, and non-alien stuff.

I don’t want to say anything that may be a spoiler, but long story short, everything I’ve seen so far is great: both the characters — including their friendships and relationships — and the plot.

When I see things about dog friendly workplaces or companies that adopt cats, my initial thought is 'how great!' I love animals and love the idea of having pets at work. But what about people who are allergic? Like, that's not a small issue (and it ranges from swollen, itchy eyes to inability to breathe) and it's pretty unfair to just tell them to suck it up and take allergy medicine every day. (As an aside, does that ever come up with service dogs? Labs are pretty common but are also a dog a lot of people are allergic to. How do you reconcile that? Is there a push for more hypoallergenic service dogs, like poodles?)

First blog, how exciting! This one is for my Pokémon Diamond Trainer Art! This is basically a psychological breakdown of what is essentially an art therapy piece I made to help me work through my childhood.

This art made me think for a long while about my earlier childhood. This point in my life is very blurry, and I don’t have a lot of core memories, more so a collection of vague feelings and actions from around the time I’m 5 to 12. Despite that, I do remember two big parts of this time. My love of video games, and my love of the outdoors. I was always, always in the woods.

When I got my first DS, it was like a dream come true. I could play in the solitude of the woods for hours on my DS, and when I wasn’t doing that, I was following creeks and streams, and exploring abandoned buildings in this vast woods surrounding our town. I was always cut up in the best ways. I miss the feeling of fearlessness I had back then. I wasn’t afraid to get hurt, or to adventure on my own and I always trusted myself to know the way back.

I never got lost. But my hair, curly as it was would always take leaves and sticks with me wherever I went. I wore them like a badge of Honour. Mud from the creek on the bottom of my too long jeans and the cuffs of my hoodie. And if it ever got too dark, bam, DS on and open as a flashlight.

That sort of freedom… I wish I had it back. I wish I could disappear for hours into the woods and not be hounded by adult life. That there wasn’t a possibility I could have the cops called on me or be shot or charged with trespassing. The freedom to just exist in woods that humans haven’t touched in years, where turtles and frogs hid under rocks and I always know my way home. But things are different now. So different…

random thoughts

Why do we work so hard to keep unhealthy attachments? I’m not talking about like, a physically abused person putting on make up to cover bruises (whole other thing obviously) I’m talking about toxic relationships that leave less visible damage. Attachments we are always so eager to bitch about, well....because they frustrate or hurt us or neglect us or lie or gas light or generally fuck with us in some negative way. Why keep it? Fear of being change/ saying too much/being misunderstood, would be my stupid reasons, off the top of my head. Though, I’m not so far gone....at least I’m aware of the problems on my end personally (not that I’m doing anything about it besides bitching, am i?). But why push and pull so hard to keep someone in your life, who keeps doing the things that hurt you? And how exactly are loved ones supposed to help, when it’s not their business, AND generally, people get pretty defensive when it comes to calling out things that really NEED to be. My blood sugar is so low right now. Things are so difficult to talk to people about now. Things that used to go without saying, don’t anymore. People respond faster to only trigger words in sentences, without bothering to let the entire thought expressed marinate. Why are we all in such a rush to misunderstand each other? You have to be full inclusive of everything, in every statement or discussion, about every subject and it’s exhausting and a complete waste of time. Like right there, the use of the word  inclusive in that way, can easily to mind that i might be complaining about pronoun preferences, and by extension, complaining about gender identity. Now, I’m not. At all. But- that should have gone without saying. Everyone is waiting to jump on a word or phrase that echos in their own mind as possibly offensive or not inclusive, making little problems, stretch. Common sense died a slow painful death ages ago. People complain about all p.c. culture, when really half the things labeled as politically correct are just general civilized behavior. That is done to taint the definition of political correctness, to sour everyone to it. Like social justice warrior. Some how the definition of that became lonely angry people yelling at strangers online, specifically in the tone of Liberal/Left, in an typically uninformed way, running only on a very cartoon version of morality (btw all that junk I just said in no way reflects my feelings about liberal folks)....when really, a social justice warrior would be the kind of person who’s fighting for people being treated as less then standard human being in a specified location. Adults can get married. So why did it take so long for gay people to be allowed to? Marriage is sacred my left ass cheek---already clearly understood that marriage originates as a business contract. Literally, no rational reason why. So, ‘a social justice warrior’ would seek to correct the fact that while lives aren’t being threatened in this example, rights are being denied. The fact that these things need to be spelled out is deeply depressing. Having an open honest discussion (in an attempt to understand and maybe open their mind) with someone who believes marriage is only between a man and a woman would be fine......if we only knew how to listen to each other. We can’t get anything done if we can’t agree on what the fuck reality is. People talking about they’re just trying to find the curve?? Really? REALLY? THIS A MOVEMENT OF PEOPLE TOO DENSE TO GRASP THEIR OWN INSIGNIFICANCE IN SPACE TO THE POINT  THAT THEY CAN”T BELIEVE THAT THEY CANT PHYSICALLY SEE HOW WE WALK ON A BALL OF DIRT AND WATER- SO IT MUST BE FLAT    Nope. I definitely need to eat something.

I wish there was a way to capture the little, seemingly insignificant moments in life. A camera doesn't capture the moments right, and the moments aren't enough to justify a nonfiction piece. They're just moments and they're absolutely beautiful, and I hope I never forget them. But I will forget them someday. The moment will be gone, just like that. Even so, the moments did exist at one point. Maybe there's just a little bit of joy that works its way into my heart each time something beautiful happens. Maybe there will be a ghost of a smile on my face each time something knocks at my memory's door.
