Defrel chooses Sampdoria | Football Italia
Roma striker Gregoire Defrel has reportedly chosen a return to Sampdoria, despite offers from Cagliari, Saint-Etienne and Sassuolo.
The forward is available on loan with an option or even obligation to buy for approximately €14m.
There was interest from several clubs, including Cagliari and Sassuolo in Serie A, with Ligue 1 outfit Saint-Etienne stepping up their pursuit today.
However, Sportitalia and Sky Sport Italia are confident Defrel has chosen Sampdoria.
He spent last season there on loan, scoring 12 goals in 39 official matches, but would also reunite with former Sassuolo and Roma Coach Eusebio Di Francesco.
It’s believed the presence of the tactician proved decisive.

Saint-Etienne push for Defrel | Football Italia
Saint-Etienne, Sampdoria and Sassuolo are the favourites for Roma striker Gregoire Defrel, with the Ligue 1 side surging forward.
The 28-year-old has just returned from a loan spell with Sampdoria, where he scored 12 goals in 39 competitive appearances.
He is expected to go out on another loan with option to buy and a return to Samp is certainly possible.
This is especially true because their new Coach is Eusebio Di Francesco, who Defrel already worked with at both Sassuolo and Roma.
With that in mind, a comeback for Sassuolo is also an option, where he’d support Francesco Caputo and Domenico Berardi in attack.
However, Le 10 Sport claim Saint-Etienne are taking strong steps to seal a deal for Defrel and had a long meeting to discuss their strategy.
Although Defrel is French, his entire football career has been in Italy, joining the Parma academy in 2011.

11 goals last season: Everton eyeing up a summer move for versatile attacker
Everton have been linked with a move for the French attacker Gregoire Defrel.
According to Corriere dello Sport (translated by SportWitness), the player is of interest to Everton and Watford.
It will be interesting to see if the Toffees make a move for the player in the coming weeks.
Defrel is up for sale and therefore it won’t be too hard agreeing to a deal for him. The 27-year-old could be a decent squad option for Marco Silva.
He managed to score 11 goals on loan at Sampdoria last season and he could be an upgrade on Calvert-Lewin and Tosun.
The asking price hasn’t been mentioned in the report but he is unlikely to cost too much. He is unwanted at Roma and the Italians will look to get rid.
A reasonable offer should be enough to get Everton their man.
Everton need attacking depth to challenge for the Europa League slots next year and someone like Defrel would be ideal.
The Frenchman is at the peak of his powers and he could make an immediate impact at Everton.
The 27-year-old can play on the right side of the attack as well and his versatility will be an added bonus for Silva.

Sampdoria striker Gregoire Defrel is reportedly on the verge of joining Premier League side Newcastle United.
According to ANSA, Newcastle are ‘very close’ to agreeing a €15m deal for Defrel, who has since been replaced at Samp by Manolo Gabbiadini.
The Frenchman scored 23 goals in 73 appearances for Sassuolo before moving to Roma for €20m in the summer of 2017.
However, injuries and constantly being played out on the right as opposed to his favoured position of centre-forward saw him score just once for the Giallorossi.
Defrel did net six times in his first 12 Serie A appearances for Samp, whom he joined on loan with an €18.5m option to buy last year, but he has failed to add to his tally in the League since November 11.
The Magpies, coached by ex-Napoli boss Rafa Benitez, are the Premier League’s second-worst goalscorers and find themselves a point adrift of safety.
