…what if eda’s dad carves her a prosthetic arm?
There’s been a lot of discussion of certain parts of the latest episode going around lately, and as someone with relevant experiences, I thought I’d throw my two cents in.
So, we finally meet Eda’s father, and she sees him again after many years. It turns out he’s an expert palisman carver, but he no longer carves due to physical issues resulting from when he was attacked by the owl beast, in the same incident that took out his eye.
Dell is shown to have a tremor in his right hand, and in the dialogue it’s implied this is from the injuries he got from the owl beast. This was -really- well animated, by the way
So what does this tell us? Quite a bit! Most people don’t know it, but there are many different kinds of and causes of tremors. (Disclosure: I was diagnosed with Essential Tremor at age 11 and have been dealing with it ever since. It was no real surprise as this type is an autosomal dominant genetic disease with a 50% risk of being passed down to children with a parent with the disease, which I have.)
There are - neurological- tremors, where the cause lies in the brain and how it functions. These tremors include ET (Essential Tremor, which can be genetic), Parkinson’s disease, parkinsonism of various types, and others. Parkinson’s and parkinsonism can be caused by exposure to toxins. These are permanent, but can be treated with the right medication.
There are tremors caused by hormonal issues - this would include hyperthyroidism, low blood sugar, autonomic nervous system dysfunctions, low blood sugar, and others. Fever and sepsis can also cause tremoring. These go away when the underlying issue is corrected.
There are tremors caused by injury - outright physical damage to muscles, tendons, and nerves.
I would guess - and it’s only a guess - judging by the amount of scarring on Del’s hand, particularly across the palm, that his is an issue due to injury. The hand is a pretty complex piece of work, and the owl beast’s claws - we see him going hand to hand with it in Eda’s flashback - could have done some pretty severe damage to a very delicate area, cutting though tendon, muscle, and nerves. He may have very little control of that hand, no grip strength, and a lack of feeling in it. Eda’s memory of what happened is focused on the loss of his eye, but she was in no condition to take everything in at the time, and obviously there was a LOT more that happened to him.
Still, I love the representation of tremors, that it’s well portrayed, that people have them and they can be disabling. There are VERY few media portrayals, as has been pointed out in the ongoing discussion. Perhaps the best we ever got was Katherine Hepburn, who acted in movies and onstage for years with ET so much that it became part of her signature style. There is a VERY intense scene near the end of “The Lion in Winter” where she manages to use her tremor to devastating emotional effect. She learned to work with her beast.
I have a lot more to say, but this post is already long - I don’t post often, but when I do they tend to be doozies. Probably will post more later.
Ok but why is no one mad that eda and lilith's dad used a party popper that was basically a firework INSIDE the house?????
I'm sure he was trying to make them smile, but cmon man-
