The Rock - Delakota
Sean Keaveany played this on 6 Music this morning, and I actually had to sit down and take a few minutes to myself.
It was like experiencing a timeslip; school uniform and new backpacks, Saturday mornings in Oxfam, afternoons in Vagabonds in Ipswich Buttermarket, nights spent watching arthouse videos rented from the library, and reading the classics in between learning how to roll because there was literally nothing else to do…
And this short, funny-looking boy from Lancashire, who I didn’t really fancy, but who I really really liked, and who I thought was a bit special, because he loved early R.E.M. and the Manic Street Preachers in almost exactly the same ways I used to. Back in 1998, I thought that meant something.
My heart felt full, then heavy, then happy, then melancholy - and all this before breakfast.
It never fails to amuse me how rapidly and powerfully one song can take you somewhere you thought you’d left behind.
SONG FOR TODAY: Delakota - The Rock
Continuing my series of underrated indie classics from my teen years, here's Delakota with an amazing track from the 1998 album 'One Love'.
