INTERIOR: When the industrial rawness meets the homely boho

If you love the looks of big industrial spaces but they are little too cold and rough for you soften them up with a touch of boho.

 It may sound like a paradox but an industrial interior with boho accessories may actually be a perfect fit for the extraordinary and one of a kind apartment you’re dreaming about.

The key element of creating the proper “warehouse look” is to display the original buildings materials as raw walls, bricks, concrete pillars, metal frames of lofty windows or exposed pipes and ducts. 

Put a signature piece of functional art on your exposed wall.

Look for the combination of metal and wood. Choose the old looking things over sleek and minimalistic designs. Find metal, wood and wired glass incorporated into one piece as shown by the kitchen island, coffee table and bar benches below.

Don’t worry if you live in a classic modern building either. The missing industrial features can be easily substituted by iconic furniture pieces and even smaller decorations. Go for raw concrete over classic manufactured materials.

Here we come to the part where the industrial meets boho perfectly. Embrace the unfinished feel over perfect tidiness. Use stainless steel surfaces, old metal lightings, vintage furniture.

Now let’s take a look on the soft and cozy boho part itself. The word itself comes from the French word for “gypsy”, which in this case applies to the unconventional and artistic lifestyle. Therefore setting up some rules for the style could feel a bit contradictory.

What are the most important aspects of a design product? Does form follow function? Is there a meaning behind each design product?

Successful design must be innovative and clever. These two features should combine aesthetic quality of the product, which in itself can attract customers almost at the first sight. I think there’s enough imitations and copies of already existing products. Our planet is overloaded with a large number of unnecessary items. Therefore, I prefer innovative design, which is sophisticated and functional. The artistic aspect should then be the aesthetic pleasure for the eye and a noble partner of ordinary moments.  - Ondrej Belica, studio Gimonfu.

I think that really great design product should make its owner’s life easier or more pleasant. It should be simple, beautiful, precisely processed and functional. It should have added value, for example to be environmentally friendly. - Pavla Zimmermannova, TEABAG

Keeping up with current trends and not being afraid to experiment and learn new things really pays off. Successful product should be fully functional and precisely crafted in the first place, because customer seeks quality and reliability. It should be attractive not only because of its appearance. Function, wit, meaning or story should drive the customer’s attention as well. The goal is to make the consumer feel like the product was designed specifically for them. Good product should be designed for real people and their needs, dreams and wishes. Not for some abstract entity. Good product should be affordable and accessible for a wide range of customers. - SarkaS design, Sarka Schmelzerova

Product should be easy to describe and customer friendly. It should bring either technical or aesthetic progress. Ideally, the combination of both of these two qualities. It is also very important for the product to be memorable and to be recognizable by the author’s signature style. - Jiri Chocholousek, Chocholousek Studio

Good product has its own story. As a customer, I should be able to recognize why and by whom it was designed. Product should communicate the signature style of the designer or studio. As a designer, I always keep in mind that the product should bring positive emotions whether it is childhood memories or simply a good feeling.
