yesterday (May 8th) marks the #AceDay or day of asexual visibility. In contrast to the Asexual Awareness Week in autumn, this day is less political and usually only celebrated within our community.
But something bugged me big time:
May 8 represents „Liberation Day“ (the problematic German term), in which the world was officially liberated from Germany’s Nazi regime terror. We should do that commemorate this event!
May 8 was launched by a single person (Rose, @fuckyeahasexual.tumblr.com) because of the pun ‚Ace of Spades‘ (S-eight-es), and it wasn’t even a fixed tradition until 2015!
But it’s not the only day that has been used as #AceVisibilityDay in our queer history:
The International Cake Day (November 26th) (albeit with the danger of trivializing / infantilizing our community efforts) has also been celebrated as #AceDay and many people on social media have wondered why it has been changed again and who decided that.
Therefore, I call for #DelayAceDay because the V-E-Day (Victory in Europe Day) of World War II should commemorate the official end of Germany’s crimes against humanity and we should not use this day to put asexual visibility at the center of our attention.
BECAUSE the asexual community actually has the luxury of having another date (November 26th) we’re able to use! People in my comments agree: Delay Ace Day! (we could also celebrate two times this year, so…)
