Our Best Friend | PART 1
Son Heungmin & Dele
Part 1 | Part 2
Dele is pretty sure Sonny has a secret girlfriend. But would he be happy if he found out who Sonny is dating? [Requested]
Dele knew something was going on. He knew Sonny, he could say that he knew Sonny better than anyone else, so he knew that Sonny was definitely not telling him something. Sonny was keeping a secret.
It was how lately Sonny was always on his phone, how he always rushed home as soon as training was done, how he was never available to hang out, and how he started doing that new flying-kiss gesture to the stand every time he scored a goal.
Those were obvious signs that Sonny was dating someone. Why would a twenty nine year old man look at his phone with a stupid smile if it wasn’t because of some cute pictures or flirty messages from his girlfriend? It wasn’t that adoring-uncle smile that Sonny got for his nieces and nephews, Dele knew the differences. He was one hundred percent sure that Sonny had got a secret girlfriend.
And the fact that Sonny was keeping it from him really bothered him. He was Sonny’s number one best friend, Sonny still regularly told him that, so why would Sonny want to keep something so important from him? Why would Sonny want to leave him out?
“I just don’t understand why you would want to leave me out about something like that.”
Dele couldn’t stop himself from bringing up the topic at lunch for the hundredth time after Sonny once again denied his invitation to hang out. Sonny said he was going to have another photoshoot but Dele didn’t really believe it; he surely wouldn’t be having any more photoshoots after doing two last week? Dele would need to ask for proof.
“I’m not leaving you out about anything,” Sonny shrugged. “Like I said, you will be the first person to know if I’m dating someone.”
“Yeah, so why haven’t I known about it yet?”
“Because I’m not dating anyone!”
Dele rolled his eyes before jutting his bottom lip out. He totally didn’t buy it. Because he had even shared about his suspicions to Ben and Ben said that he was thinking the same, but unlike Dele, the Welsh didn’t want to push Sonny about it. Ben reminded Dele how big of a celebrity Sonny was so he needed to be careful and private about these things. Dele understood…
But no! He needed to know! Dele always told Sonny as soon as he was sure that he fancied someone. Maybe that was more because of him needing help to understand and sort out his feelings, but still, didn’t Sonny trust him? Why couldn’t Sonny do the same?
—
“You can’t just follow him everywhere! That’s creepy, Del, and rude,” she said as she put the cup of tea she’d just made in front of him.
But it was Dele. She had been friends with him for years, she knew he wouldn’t just listen to her. He would keep doing his plan, to randomly follow Sonny around, paying surprise visits to Sonny’s house, sometimes even going to the places Sonny always went to, hoping that he would “catch” Sonny and his supposed secret girlfriend in the act.
“Sonny would be upset if he knew what you’re doing.” She shot him a warning look.
“Well, he was happy when I surprised him on his set last week,” Dele shrugged. “Gave him some advice for his shoot, some good poses, and the pictures turned out better.”
“He wouldn’t be happy if he knew that you went to ‘surprise’ him on set just because you hoped to see his girlfriend there,” she took the seat across from him and took a sip of her tea. “It’s silly of you to think that he’d bring his girlfriend to work, if she even exists. You know how private he is.”
“I had to take my chance.” Dele got hold of the cup to give his cold hands some warmth, dropping his gaze and staring absent-mindedly at the faint scratches on her wooden dining table.
“Well, let’s say if it’s true.” She leaned back on her chair, brushing off her hair from her shoulders by slightly moving them around, before she folded her arms in front of her chest. “Let’s say that Sonny does have a girlfriend and you ‘catch them in the act’. What are you gonna do, then?”
Dele picked up his cup, blew his tea softly, and took a sip. “I don’t know…” He took another sip, glancing at her before looking away to her neatly organised kitchen. “Nothing.”
She scoffed, shaking her head in disbelief. This man never ceased to surprise her. “You’re not being serious.”
“I’m just probably gonna pretend to be mad for a couple of weeks because he lied to me. So many times,” he casually explained, finally meeting her questioning gaze. “Then tease him about it for a couple more weeks. And, I don’t know, ask him to formally introduce her to me.”
“You know, if he truly does have a girlfriend, you could actually just wait it out until he’s ready to share the news with you. He must have his reasons.”
“Why does everybody keep saying that?” The look on Dele’s face looked like he thought it was ridiculous for everyone to think like that. But after a moment, his face changed. The creases on his forehead changed from showing annoyance to seriousness. “I want to know when my best friend is dating someone. I have to be the first one to know. It’s just… It’s just important to me.”
She couldn’t miss the hint of sentimentality when he said the last bit and it made her chest feel tightened yet warm at the same time. Despite how ridiculous Dele was acting in her opinion, she actually could understand him. Sonny was like a brother to Dele, one of the most important people in Dele’s life, and she knew how deeply Dele cared about his brother.
“Are you sure he hasn't told you anything?” Dele asked again and she sighed because honestly, she was getting tired of the question.
“No, Del, not even a word.”
And even though she’d told Dele this lie a couple of times before, she still felt so horrible every time she said it. It never got easier, especially when she knew that she was highly possibly hurting Dele. She felt terrible for saying that she knew nothing when the truth was she knew exactly what was going on.
Because it was true that Sonny was dating someone.
Sonny was dating her.
—
The gentle stroke from her on the back of his hand was the thing Sonny tried to focus on. They’d got the win today, but he was quite disappointed in himself because he didn’t score a goal today—his best attempt was a strong shot at the seventieth minute that hit the post.
“I really thought it was going to go in, so ready to celebrate, you know,” he said with a sheepish smile, fixing his gaze on the buttons on his steering wheel. “I haven’t scored in two weeks…”
“But we still won,” she said from the passenger seat. From the corner of his eyes, he could see her searching for his face, so he turned his head slightly and immediately found her offering a sweet and brighter smile. “You’ll get yours next week, believe me. You always score against City.”
Sonny chortled and nodded. “Yeah, I have to at least score one.”
“Or maybe two…” She trailed off. Sonny started mirroring her smile as he leaned in.
He captured her lips and soon after his hand went to the side of her face to hold it. Kissing her was his new favourite thing to do. They’d been dating for a few months and every time he kissed her, it still felt like the first time. It was still crazy for him to think that he was dating her.
What did Sonny used to do after a game? He went home to an empty and quiet house, probably watched the game he just played to review it, laid idly on the couch or bed, waited for his bedtime to come so he could go to sleep—a very boring and lonely routine. But now he had a new routine of spending time with her, driving her home and sometimes having dinner at her house. Despite them having to sneak themselves out of the stadium very carefully so no one could see, Sonny was loving it, the thrills and everything, especially the privacy that they got.
“You’ll come next week, won’t you?” Sonny asked as he put a hand just above her knee, gently caressing it. “I need you to be there. It’ll be easier for me if you’re there.”
She giggled shyly and Sonny just continued to give her the puppy eyes. He meant what he said. Lately he realised that he felt more at ease knowing that she was there in the stands supporting him; when the game got difficult or a little heated, he’d steal glances at her and the glimpses of her was enough to stay calm and focused.
“Of course I’ll come. I wouldn’t miss the big game, can’t miss you scoring the winning goal.” She put her hand on top of Sonny’s on her lap, giving him a reassuring smile. Sonny smiled back, but then her face slowly dropped and Sonny could easily notice the hint of worry in her eyes as she looked up to him. “But maybe, when you score, maybe you can drop the celebration this time?”
Sonny furrowed his eyebrows. “You mean my celebration for you? Why?”
“It’s… I don’t know,” she shrugged, heavily inhaling some air. “We need to be careful, don’t we? I’m just worried that people are going to start to wonder who the gesture is for.”
He sighed, giving her a small sheepish smile. “We’re talking about Dele, aren’t we?” The lack of answer and response from her confirmed that they were indeed talking about Dele. “Do you think it’s time for us to tell him?”
“It’s starting to not to feel right, keeping it from him… I don’t want to lie to him anymore. We’ve figured out things we needed to figure out, so maybe we can start sharing to him and maybe to our closest friends?”
Sonny fell silent. She was right, maybe it was time. It had been a few months, they had been having a lot of discussions, they’d figured out how to do this relationship whilst keeping it private, they were now less confused and clueless than when they’d started dating. And maybe if they started telling their closest friends, they didn’t need to be so secretive anymore. They could stop lying to Dele, which had been the hardest thing to do.
“Let’s start with Dele, yeah?” Sonny said, taking her hand on his, giving it a light squeeze. She nodded. “Let’s find time to tell him. Let’s do a movie night at my place like usual?”
“That would be perfect.”
Sonny nodded before leaning again for another kiss. She began to lean in too, Sonny’s heart skipped a beat from the way she was staring at him with a faint smile on her face. Their faces were so close, but she suddenly averted her gaze and her face fell so swiftly. She gasped, pulled back, and stayed frozen on her seat; she looked like she was seeing a ghost.
And then there were three knocks on Sonny’s window. He got really alarmed, so he quickly turned around. His heart jumped when he saw a familiar figure.
Speaking of the devil… He was there. Standing right outside the window.
It was Dele.
