April 2020//30 Day Writing
It’s not very sad I’m not that good at writing sad things anyway enjoy
Something just didn’t seem right. You could feel it. Every time you saw each other nothing felt like it used to when you first started dating. The butterflies were still there but you could feel something wasn’t quite right. The two of you were drifting further and further apart. You were both busy so you couldn’t see each other as often. Dele was busy with training and games and you were busy with your job so it meant no time for just each other and it was difficult, to say the least. When you were together though it was incredible. If work didn’t come between the two of you that is. Life didn’t seem to fulfil you either though. You had the same job for a while and although it wasn’t a horrible job it wasn’t what you wanted to do for the rest of your life. Nothing seemed to fall into place like it used to.
You were at home alone when the email came through. You had gotten the opportunity to go to your dream job so you applied to it not actually thinking that you would get it. Thousands of people apply every year and they only take in 5 or so people. Never in a million years did you think that you would get the job. Opening up the email you saw it said CONGRATULATIONS. Not believing it you read through the email properly and it said the date that you were expected to start and when they want to hear a reply. You actually couldn’t believe it. The excitement was there and all you wanted to do was jump around and scream it out loud but you didn’t, calmly you messaged your best friend about the news and you sat back and thought more about this opportunity. It all came crashing down however the more you thought about it. This opportunity meant you would have to leave everything behind. It was in America but it was also everything that you have ever dreamed of. Grabbing your phone off of the side you found Dele’s name and instantly messaged him. You needed to tell Dele about this.
To Dele💙: Are you free to meet up tonight?
You sent to Dele. The two of you didn’t live together. You had been talking about it but it had never happened not finding the time so you still lived on your own. In a way, you wished you lived with Dele as you would have more time to see him but that hadn’t happened.
From Dele💙: Yeah, do you want to come over?
You said you knew that Dele wouldn’t finish training until 5 or something so it would give him the perfect opportunity to get home and change before you come over.
You kept yourself busy until the time that you had to leave and then got in the car. Once in the car, the nerves had started to properly build up. You still drove over but your brain was thinking of all of the worst possibilities that could happen. It didn’t take long till you got to Dele’s house so you immediately got out of the car and walked towards his door. Knocking on the door, Dele opened it and took you into his arms before pulling you into the living room and kissing you senseless. After the kiss, you spent some time talking when you knew that you would have to tell him about the job that you had got offered soon so you just spat it out. Once it comes out there is no taking it back and that is a better option right about now.
“I’ve got something to tell you,” You blurted out. You had to tell him and ask for his opinion on it. You were already pretty certain you were going to take the job but you still needed Dele’s opinion. It was your dream to go here and you knew you needed to take it.
“What is it?” Dele asked, turning to face you properly. He could tell that this was going to be a serious conversation so he put his phone on the table in front of him so you could have his full attention. You ran through the conversation in your head thinking of all the possibilities that could happen including the bad ones. Finally, you opened your mouth to begin the conversation again.
“I’ve got another job, it's my dream one,” You continued. As soon as those words left your lips a smile took over his face and he took you into his arms kissing all over your face.
“I’m so happy for you,” He said kissing you in between each word. You took this all in for a moment not knowing how this night would end and you wanted to take it all in.
“That’s not it,” You started when you knew the conversation had to continue.
“It’s in America, meaning I have to move halfway across the world,” You continued quietly. It was so quiet that you didn’t know if Dele would be able to hear you or not but apparently he did.
“You can’t do that,” Dele immediately said. You were taken back by what Dele had just said. In a way, you expected this kind of reaction but it still shocked you and hurt. No matter how far away you are it’s still your dream and long-distance relationships can work. As long as you trust each other for a long period of time and find time to talk to each other.
“What?” You said wanting to make sure that you heard Dele correctly.
“You can’t go,” Dele said again. Yep, you heard him correctly. It also made you snap.
“Why can’t you see that this is my dream? I stayed with you when you went for your dream even when there were times I wouldn’t see you for a while because of you training hard to get to where you wanted to be. I stood by you all those times you got knocked down. I cheered for you when you got to play especially in the World Cup and Champions League final. I want to go and chase my dream and you say I can’t. I thought we were meant to be supportive of each other. Why can’t you be happy that I finally got my dream?” You cried to him. You could feel the tears brimming in your eyes but you wouldn’t let them fall. No matter how much you wanted to.
“You would be halfway around the world. I was only away a couple of weeks at a time,” Dele said back. He seemed totally unaffected by what he had said. You and Dele continued to argue your voice breaking more and more with each word that passed through your lips. You were so made and that made you upset. Why couldn’t he understand? It was just for training as well there was a possibility for you to come back to London once it was all done but Dele couldn’t get that through his thick skull.
“Maybe we should just end it,” You croaked out eventually. If he wasn’t going to support your decision you couldn't stay with him. It was your dream and as much as you loved Dele maybe this job was the thing missing in your life. You needed to find that missing thing in your life and if Dele couldn’t deal with it then maybe it would have to end.
“Maybe we should,” Dele said, arms crossed against his chest. You swallowed the lump in your throat and stood up and walked out of the door. You couldn’t face him anymore without breaking down into tears. You calmly walked out of the room and towards the car not wanting to show Dele how much he was affecting you.
You got into your car not allowing the tears to fall. You wanted to get home before they fell. You wanted to be able to have clear eyes to drive home not wanting to be stuck on his driveway all night. That would be awkward. As soon as you got home you locked the door and ran straight to your bedroom getting under the covers and crying. They wouldn’t stop falling no matter what. Eventually, you fell asleep with the tears still on your face. You fell into a dreamless slumber.
Dele watched from the as you got into your car and drove off down the road, his heartbreaking into millions of pieces as you did and he finally let the tears fall down his face. He was happy for you for getting your dream job but the thought of you being so far away killed him. He probably could’ve dealt with it better but he didn’t. But now you’re no longer his, killed him more than the thought of you being so far away. He couldn’t hold in his sobs anymore letting them all out and called Eric knowing he would drop everything for Dele. Dele needed someone to be there right now. To help him.
Both of you were broken but it was for the best. There would be more heartbreak if you both stayed together so it was better to end it. Both of you were alone and crying your hearts out and felt broken. Like nothing could fix either of you. It may hurt now but it will get better. Hopefully.
