Part 2 - The Delegates
"You are of us." They interrupted, the first time he could recall them ever doing so, and it stifled his attempt to delegate responsibility for the knowledge and avoid the stress.
" ' Of you ' ? " Was all he could say after another lengthy silence.
"Indeed, though quite removed, your cellular makeup encompasses a totality of your environment and evolutionary progress through many of your so-called 'millennia' but we have determined that there is approximately .1% of your cellular biology that is undeniably identical to our own foundational biology."
It was difficult to absorb, their grasp of his language through the machine translation strained by the obvious excitement and consternation that was rising in their statements.
His anxiety, also, was exerting a certain cognitive white noise.
They didn’t wait for the silence to lengthen this time, most likely relying on the recordings of the meeting and the others that would be absorbing this information to figure out how to properly respond, he was merely the first witness to this report now, though the realization offered him no comfort.
“We have scanned our historical record and believe we have discovered the inciting event to cause this. The data provided includes these records that support our theory.
We have surmised that your entire species, as well as the biosphere of this planet, are both victims of an event so terrible that ‘criminality’ would have to be adjusted by our respective cultures to even grasp how to start justifying the situation.
There was a ….consortium-” The translation mechanism lags as it struggles to understand their meaning “- of advanced minds from our past that felt a certain frustration with the boundaries their research was being placed under, what you call ‘ethics clauses' designed to maintain the integrity and dignity of our species as we started to control our environment and understand the universal constants that are the very foundation of technology, science, and culture that brought us to you across such a far distance.
Indeed that very same technology of travel was in its infancy when this long past event occurred. This consortium was on the verge of a cultish hypothesis we can only begin to fathom, but suffice it to say that this group stole and utilized a prototype vessel to...inject a seed of our own species into a planet much like our own capable of supporting biological life.
Their science was weak, rudimentary, their grasp of the consequences even less clear.
We believe that our cellular biology attempted to assimilate within this new biosphere here after a cataclysmic event would have drastically altered the natural order of life on this planet. This lead to a rise in cognizance and biological advancement of your species far accelerated in comparison to that of your fellow fauna.
On our home planet all species advanced at a slower but similar rate, growing together and learning how to live on the planet as one culture.
You accelerated advancement put the biosphere off balance and you started utilizing technology to unfairly subjugate the other species, possibly unknowingly and from a very early era in your development.
It's a shame that you only started recording your history only a few millennia ago and haven’t been very good at record keeping. This means we will never truly be able to identify how or where the inciting impact occurred, possibly you have already discovered the evidence and destroyed it via clumsy research, but the data supports our theory and we encourage you to figure it out for yourself.
We will await your contact as we formulate a plan on how to proceed from here, do feel free to offer suggestions of your own. Suffice it to say that we feel life as you know it on this planet cannot continue as it has without destroying the biosphere.
Frankly, we are shocked that we are even able to engage with you culturally considering the circumstances, rather than discovering this through archaeological research.”
Part One - The Delegates
He sighed, feeling a twist of tension between his shoulders as the intercom announcement from his secretary came through.
"They're here sir."
"I'll be just a moment." He responds, vying for at least one more moments peace before their scientific delegation drops another galactic bomb on his desk for him to figure out.
This would be the fourth such revelation this week that he'll have to decide whether or not is worth sending up to the desk of the president via numerous departments and attachments and committees all designated to figure out how to properly disseminate all the knowledge and technology they're gaining from this exchange of culture and ideas.
Naturally there are myriad of detractors already suspicious with how one-sided the exchange has appeared to be so far, but when another civilization arrives at your doorstep with technology far advanced from your own there isn't much expectation of equivalent exchange. Indeed the few trinkets and advancements that his office had been told to offer in return were only received with the obligatory minimum polite gratitude and not commented upon in further meetings, and those had become more about their discoveries about the planet and his species, humans, and how they never quite seem to fit within their standard model of biological life.
He has this stowed within his memory as a constant source of anxiety at this point.
"Okay, send them in." He'd breathed all he could, drank water and cleared his throat enough.
The delegation swayed in with their flowing garments, the customary gestures made with the usual air of gravitas and respect that he responds to with the same.
"Greetings, we have made a breakthrough." Comes the beginning of proceedings that myriad devices record and relay to his minders, microphones and cameras on nearly every surface of his office, hidden to him but he was certain the delegation, at least partially, knew about them.
"Greetings to you as well, please share your findings." This had been a repeat response of his for several meetings and now it has a Pavlovian effect on his nervous system, he felt sympathetic responses already prickling from his core up his spine and along the short hairs on his neck and arms, his shoulders twinged with tension ratcheting up a few dozen notches.
"We had reported to your office previously of our confusion about your species' advanced existence within this sphere of biology. How your effects on the environment around you belie an uncustomary jump in reason and consciousness outside of the other species that had started on this planet." They began as a delegate stepped forward with a drive of supporting data to share, placing it on his desk.
"We have taken one of your volunteers and sampled them 'humanely' as you demanded, they are already returned to their commune and family unit, marked but unharmed. We understand that they enjoy a position of certain celebrity now because of our research, you may want to mind them." He nodded, knowing that they would be incarcerated and quarantined with their family within the day and all would most likely live out their lives in isolation and observation.
He can't help speak his mind as they let a silence lengthen between them "...You appear unusually reticent to report your findings, you're delaying more than before."
"We are concerned about the consequences of what our data suggests. After much deliberation we have decided to simply report it for now and then we will place our exchange on hiatus until we can arrive at a diplomatically sound path on how to continue."
"This isn't doing well for my psyche. I am trying to remain calm considering what you have reported in the past, if you feel it that necessary then perhaps a publ-"
"You are of us." They interrupted, the first time he could recall them ever doing so, and it stifled his attempt to delegate responsibility for the knowledge and avoid the stress.
He stood at the podium and placed both hands on the sides, the wide round sensors that served as his eyes reflecting the camera flashes that slowly dwindled, as did the soft applause and cheers he patiently waited out.
"Thank you so much for your invitation, your acceptance and this recognition I still feel I do not truly deserve." There was a small return of applause and some louder cheers but folks were still being accommodating about his need for a softer environment.
He silences them gently with raised palm, gloved hand elegant.
"At this most auspicious of opportunities, please allow me the indulgence of gazing upon you all with mine own eyes."
As his hands raise toward what counted for his face the murmur in the crowd starts to rise farther, ebbing with his ceasing movement. There is a soft click as he works the clasps of the mask, a hissing, both small sounds can be heard throughout the spacious ballroom.
The next sounds from the crowd can only be described as awe as his mask comes away like any custom fitted helmet should, but where a human head would be, were he human, instead there was void. The edges of a smoothly bald humanoid head, a slender neck, and as he turns some features like nose, ears, but beyond the outline his internal structure was simply devoid of light. Indeed the very room near to him appears to grow darker still while he slowly turns and scans over the crowd.
