why they are in macau: jieyong was born in guangzhou but his family moved to macau when he was a baby. he has lived there practically his whole life and has stayed because of he is fairly close to his family. they always made a point to stick together, habitually sharing dinner and frequenting many family trips over the years. additionally, he gains many benefits and privileges from their wealth and has always felt comfortable in macau --- though he does wish to venture out alone more.

what made them turn to the group they’re in: his family has been in elysium since the start and for most of his life, never thought much against it. they became extremely wealthy throughout property management & real estate in both china and the united states and gained much of their wealth in the 1970s. along with the rest of his siblings, he is expected to contribute to the family’s company and maintain a good standing within the group.

what their ambitions in the group are: jieyong is the second oldest child of three boys and one girl. his older brother works as a secretary for the family’s company, but their dad believes that jieyong will be able to surpass his brother and attain a higher executive position like him. currently in college, he is studying business and economics and plans to be a chief officer in the family company. with this, he aims to increase the wealth of his  family and gain more dominance/control in elysium.

how their group members would describe them: those that have known jieyong since he was little know that he was never really pegged as the natural-born-leader type. as a child he was very quiet and reserved. he was always obedient to his elders and for the most part, stayed out of trouble. as he matured, he became greatly praised for his kindness, intelligence, and ability to assess and solve various situations. members in elysium see jieyong as an approachable, hardworking, and caring young man bound to success, making him a valuable heir to add onto the legacy of elysium.

what they don’t know, however, is that his obedience to his family and elders isn’t always so true. as he got older and gained more independence, jieyong became rebellious and flighty behind the scenes, secretly engaging in street races, illegal trade, and has even began to question the actions and motives of elysium.

why they are in macau:  she wasn’t born in macau,  and for a long time macau wasn’t even something the family thought about.  they lived out their life in beijing with a house in the suburbs,  letting the help raise the young girl and cram her full of studies to one day take over the law firm her father had founded.  she was soaring through her academics at the speed of light,  always quick to finish something in order to impress her father.  in the spring before she turned 12,  her mother’s extravagant life took them to the city of macau.  it was then that her father decided to take up residency here to build the firm.  she continued her education as always,  with tutors in the comfort of her own home,  which was now a pent - house overlooking the large city and it’s lights. 

what made them turn to the group they’re in:  of course she’d thought of her life as a member of elysium a thousand times.  upon their move to macau,  her father had found his place there and soon after her mother.  it was like a lineage  ;  she only played with little girls whose families were part of elysium and anyone else  -------  well,  their influence could be given to other little girls whose futures weren’t so dependent on how their childhood went.  her life had been all books and studies for the first part of her life,  she’d graduated high school at fourteen and college at seventeen,  finding a job as an intern,  which for the time being was something for her to learn every aspect of what went into a law firm.  soon,  it’d be hers.  all this had been set out for her since the moment she’d been born and maybe she wanted some kind of change,  or maybe she wanted to appease the ones who raised her.  they’d done so with the intention that she join elysium and gain power so perhaps it’s what she was born to do.  it wasn’t until she learned of conflicts between two opposing powers,  that her interest was piqued and she joined officially.

what their ambitions in the group are:  her father had told her of all the politics that go into elysium,  though she’d never really listened until she had shown her own interest upon graduating college.  it was then that she started noticing his change in demeanor at the mention of elysium and the others that he always spoke of with poison lacing his words.  until then,  elysium had been nothing more to her than some group her parents were a part of and something she would soon have to find herself enveloped in  ( despite her own dreams for a life ).  now,  it screamed at her,  and she couldn’t say that anything in her life had done that before then.  something about the conflict between two powers made her heart beat fast and sweat form on the back of her neck.  and in lieu of all the years she had not listened,  now was her time to learn.  

how their group members would describe them:  annalise,  coming from power and wealth,  of course has trouble taking orders.  of course her parents had always told her doing something as common as taking orders just wasn’t something she was made for.  so,  yes,  she struggles with such.  but the dedication and pure fire she puts in when she does want to do something is beyond measurable.  when she wants something,  she gets it.  and by any means necessary,  no matter the cost  ( as it can always be paid ).

why they are in macau: anso was born and raised in korea. he never knew his parents, and was instead raised by his mother’s sister. his knowledge about his own family is minimal -- and his aunt never provided much more information on it either, regardless of how much he pushed. he was something of a ‘troubled child’ from the get go. he was in and out of school because his aunt could barely afford to support the two of them, and he fell into the wrong crowd quite early on. he disappeared from home at age thirteen and became something of a runner, an errand boy if you will, for a local mobster. he spent eight years under his tutelage, rising in ranks and favor of work. anso really grew up to be the kind of person to have trouble with authority -- - a trait that was amusing and easily exploited when he was a young boy, but that made his presence with the gang increasingly at risk the older he got. his rage, self-destruction, and unhinged tendencies ( all that had been well-fueled and honed over the years ) led to somewhat of a volatile end to his association with the mob when he shot said mobster in the head and fled town to escape the bloodbath that was to follow. cashing out, anso ditched his previous name & life when he booked it to macau at the age of twenty-one. he’s been here ever since.  what made them turn to the group they’re in: for one, familiarity. anso doesn’t do well with authority or structure, but it is familiar. there’s not as much chaos to wreak as a lone agent. with the cicadas -- he has the purpose of wreaking havoc, and has the connections to be able to do it big time. with the nature of the work he’d been doing before joining the cicadas, his hunger for destruction is was ultimately led him to the cicadas.  what their ambitions in the group are: not to sound like a broken record, but -- - chaos. anso has absolutely little to no self-preservation; he’s here for a good time, not a long time. ( and a good time in his books involves a lot of blood. ) he doesn’t have any wishes to rise in ranks or gain any sort of power. he’s here because he wants to bring destruction, wants to see a city on its knees, and wants his hands soaked with the blood of it all.  how their group members would describe them: as i mentioned above, he’s not the best with authority -- so any time that that’s a key point in his relationship with someone, i can’t see it going very well. he’s also not power hungry or really too bothered with power dynamics, so i can see him not quite caring much for the unsaid etiquette of the cicadas. as he’s worked as a hitman for some time now, he’s the type of person to do it his way and not care of the consequences -- something which i’m sure ( and hope -- ) gets him into trouble often. there’s something unnatural about him, something unnerving in the stillness of him and the way there’s something unhinged in his gaze -- he’s a ticking bomb, anyone around him can see that.

why they are in macau: vincent has lived in macau his whole life. he was born there, and grew up there. he never saw a reason to leave when all of his money, power, and fame was all in macau. he studied abroad in america for one year when he was completing his bachelor’s, but ultimately came back to become a lawyer, and the rest is history. what made them turn to the group they’re in: vincent comes from a family of high-profile executives in the entertainment industry, and joining elysium with his parents and his sibling was expected of him. his family had been in the public eye for so long that it seemed like a no-brainer. however, he was never interested in getting involved with elysium. or any of the bs his family got into, really. he questioned a lot of the corrupt and selfish things they’d do without consequence. he was always treated differently. he graced tabloids and harbored a shitty reputation out of spite for his family with headlines on street racing, drugs, club-hopping when not at legal age. he was truly treated a black speck that tarnished their family’s reputation. sure, he got into trouble, but he was still an excellent student and never wished ill on anyone unless they got in his way. unfortunately, the fact that he wasn’t the perfect son was the only thing the other byuns cared about. for the most part, he found out about the cicadas and saw it as an opportunity to get revenge on his family. he cut off his family after draining a large sum of their money and downloading files without their knowledge. he joined the cicadas and exiled himself, and hasn’t spoken to any of the byuns in over a year, hoping he could overthrow elysium and destroy his family’s livelihood while he’s at it, too. (guess who has a grudge ! haha) what their ambitions in the group are: truthfully, vincent works for vincent first and the cicadas second. his ultimate goal is to just spite his family and overthrow elysium. he doesn’t really care how it’s done, as long as it gets done. how their group members would describe them: vincent’s great at taking the orders that he wants to. he can be difficult, but he fits well into the cicadas’ lifestyle. he loves to gamble, street race, and drink just as much as the rest of them, but he’s sometimes just thought of as the rich pretty boy that wants to rebel against his family. especially when he first joined over a year ago, some thought he could be a potential spy. he’s gotten to know his fellow cicadas at this point, but still has a lot to prove. he’s worked hard as a lawyer to keep the members out of trouble, and vincent has yet to lose a case. being the manipulator that he is, he’s always been great at communicating and charming others, so even those that do shit on him probably like him to some extent. he’ll never take shit without throwing it right back and keeps most people at an arm’s length. people don’t know him past the surface and he hardly lets people get that far. for the most part, everyone knows his business anyways and he doesn’t care what people think, say, or judge about him. he still keeps up with instagram, men’s fashion trends, the paps, etc... he just loves the life of luxury and can’t get away from those roots, which could certainly be problematic at times for the cicadas.

why they are in macau: yuri grew up in seoul with her family. her father is the ceo of some major company and her mother spent her days in luxury. she’s never had the best relationship with her father considering how absent he was always from her life and how little he thought she was capable of. she has an older brother who she absolutely adores and when he branched off to launch a new office of the company in macau, she jumped ship and moved to macau to follow him. she found work as a model easily enough and was close to one of the only people that really matters to her. what made them turn to the group they’re in: her older brother was twenty-three at the time became a part of elysium shortly after establishing himself in macau. she decided to join the group when she turned nineteen after seeing just how far the group’s reach was.  what their ambitions in the group are: yuri grew up with a silver spoon in her mouth. she has never wanted for anything and she enjoys living life at the top of the food chain. she also wants to be completely independent from her father and his money. elysium’s connections have allowed her to build a life for herself and she’d be damned if she let anyone take that away from her or her brother. how their group members would describe them: yuri is an absolutely spoiled princess, but she knows how to focus and get shit done when she needs to. she tries really hard not to embarrass herself or her brother. that being said, she’s twenty-two years old right now so she ranks about middle of the pack. she’s a brat without a doubt, but a rather loyal one to those who prove themselves worthy of her.

why they are in macau: the easy explanation would be she ran away. her life, never glamorous or safe, was suffocating her and she knew she needed to get away. she got there when she was a little over eighteen, ready to leave her old life behind. what made them turn to the group they’re in: survival. she had skills the cicadas needed and she needed some sort of protection for the habits she had developed since moving to macau. she’s a selfish being to the core, too used to rely only on herself to trust anyone else. but the cicadas seemed to share her opinions of the bourgeois and she figured if she scratched their backs she would at least have some sort of protection if she ever needed it.  what their ambitions in the group are: the only ambition haeun has is to reach the heights where she never was allowed to go. as much as she despises the wealth surrounding her it was something she never had. she craves it more than she likes to admit, but she also wants that world to burn. so she’ll help the cicadas achieve that goal, starting with elysium. how their group members would describe them: she listens well enough, but only to the point where she feels comfortable. she dislikes being ordered what to do and will snap at you if you try to act like you’re above her. if a member were to describe her they would get maybe one or two facts out before running out of material. she’s cold, she keeps to herself .. uhh, her blog does pretty well. haeun made sure that she wasn’t close to anyone in the cicadas and likes it that way.
